It provides students with a general understanding of the basic financial concepts that every manager should know. Students will learn basic concepts of business finance including business ethics, financial statement analysis, financial ratio analysis, the time value of money, bond valuation, stock valuation, and the effect of these concepts on business decision-makings. Assignments and Course Prerequisites Students will undergo chapter assessments following the completion of each chapter’s lecture. The due dates for the graded assessments will be announced in class. If you miss class, you are responsible for what happens in class (any and all announcements and discussions) and for obtaining the information covered from a classmate. All assessments must be completed by their ANNOUNCED due dates. Some end-of-chapter problems will be assigned as practice problems to sharpen students’ understanding of financial theory and analytical techniques. These problems will not be graded, but I’ll discuss them in class if needed. Students are responsible for all the subject matter discussed in the class. You will need a financial calculator to work on many of the book problems, especially the time value of money problems. I will use the Texas Instruments BAII PLUS calculator in class. Examinations and Grading a) There will be three in-class examinations including the final examination. b) There are no make-up examinations. Absence from a scheduled examination without approval of the instructor and a valid written excuse will result in a grade of zero. Approval to be absent from an examination will be granted only in the case of extreme personal emergency. If approval is granted by the instructor, the student must make up the exam immediately. To pass the course, students should take all three examinations on the scheduled dates. Missing one exam will result in failure in this course. c) The exams will be closed book and based on assigned readings, lectures, practice and assessment problems. d) Only a calculator, pencils, and an eraser can be used during examinations. No computers will be allowed. Any type of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, copying, cheating, turning on cellular phones, etc.) in attendance checks, project, class sessions, and examinations will result in a final course grade of "F" and will be reported to the University. e) One 3X5 note card with formulas only will be allowed during the examinations. f) Grading for the course will be as follows: Percent Points Examination #1 (Friday, June 16) 25% 100 Examination #2 (Friday, June 23) 25% 100 Examination #3 (Friday, June 30) 25% 100 Chapter Assessments 17.5% 70 Attendance & Participation 7.5% 30 Total Score 100% 400 Exam/Assessment dates may be subject to change! Grades will be awarded on the usual shaded grading scale: A: >= 90% C: 70-75.9% A-: 89-89.9% C-: 69-69.9% B+: 87-88.9% D+: 67-68.9% B: 80-86.9% D: 60-66.9% B-: 79-79.9% F: below 60% C+: 76-78.9% Attendance Class attendance is required. Students are expected to be regular and punctual to class. Attendance will be regularly checked. Unexcused absences will adversely affect your grade. If you have special problems preventing your attendance at a class, please send me an email. Only an email is acceptable. Do not tell me about absences in the hall or in my office.
