What is bias?
Bias refers to an author's expression of his/ her own opinion on a
particular issue without examining and presenting enough evidences.
Bias in Writing
 A prejudice against something an author is writing about.
 Favoritism for something an author is writing about.
 An author letting feelings or emotions cloud his/her objectivity
concerning something he/ she is writing about.
Recognizing Bias
1. Look for loaded words - words that are charged with emotions (whether
positive or negative) can reveal an author's opinion about his/her topic.
EMOTIONAL BIASES - stem from impulse or intuition and tend to result
from reasoning influenced by feelings.
2. Watch out for stereotypes - of the author labels an entire group, the writing
is probably biased.
Examples:
1. Politicians are all corrupt.
2. Black people to be more violent and to engage more in crimes than the white
people.
3. Notice vague language or generalizations - if the author isn't using specific
language, this could be an indicator of bias.
Example:
Biased: Educators do not consider each child's particular learning style when
developing lessons.
Better: Some educators do not consider each child's particular learning style
when developing lessons.
4. Be on the lookout for one- sided arguments - if the author only presents
one side of an argument, his/her writing is probably biased.
Example:
Biased: My daughter texts constantly, which shows that teenagers use
cellphones more than they did in the past.
Better: Teenager's use cell phones, specifically for texting, has increased 33%
in the last 2 years (Mc Donald, 2011).
5. Does the author present facts or opinions?
Facts are what they are - the truth.
Opinions - can be based on feelings, emotions, or prejudices, which aren't
objective.

Mining for Minerals
Rocks that contain minerals are called ore. Mining is a process of
digging to find ore. If the ore is close to the surface, miners can create an openpit mine.
We need mines because we need to have minerals. We use minerals to
make things such as toothpaste, medicine, and airplanes. But mines also create
problems.
Working in mines can be dangerous. Miners can be trapped underground
if a tunnel collapses. Miners breathe dangerous gases and rock dust in the mine
that can make them very sick. Mining can put dangerous pollution into the
environment. Mines can destroy habitats that animals rely on the survive. Some
mining companies try to repair the habitat. Damage to animal populations might
be permanent.
