COURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces students to “graphical methods and exploratory business data analysis; the normal distribution and sampling distribution of the mean estimation for means and proportions; and introduction to hypothesis testing for one and two groups.” (Lehman Undergraduate Bulletin) COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Define, compute and analyze measures of central tendency, variation, data dispersion and positions (M) 2. Illustrate concepts and relationships using tables (such as frequency, relative frequency), and charts (including bar, line and pie charts) (M) 3. Differentiate and utilize the basic probability concepts (D) 4. Calculate joint probabilities using multiplication and addition rules (I) 5. Identify and provide examples of discrete and continuous probability distributions. Calculate and interpret standard scores (Z value) and t-statistics (I) 6. Calculate and interpret standard scores (Z value) and t-statistics (I) 7. Utilize sampling distribution and the Central Limit Theorem to make appropriate inferences about the population (I) and find the probability of a normally distributed variable using standard normal and student t-distribution tables (I) MANDATORY TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS This is an asynchronous course, and I won’t be meeting with you regularly so you will be working on the material on your own, and a big part of being successful in this course means being disciplined and independent. We will use the platform www.tophat.com where we will cover 7 chapters. To join and buy access to our course materials, go to TopHat put the name of our school, Lehman College, your school email and use Join Code: 633165 1 I have made reading our chapters reading assignments. As you read chapters, you will find questions in the text that you have to answer. Some questions give you points for just answering or participating, and some give you points only if you answer them correctly. For every chapter you will have two assignments, the questions you will find reading the chapter are assigned, as well as another End of the Chapter assignment. They are both very long so I recommend start working on them 2 weeks in advance before their due date, which is when they become available at TopHat! The average number of questions of the reading assignments is 40, and the same applies for the end of the chapter questions, so I strongly suggest you don’t leave assignments for the day they are due, or you will likely do a poor job and get a bad grade rushing to finish them. Put the following due dates of the assignments in your schedule and get multiple warnings, 2 weeks to due date, 3 days to due date, whatever works for your schedule and rhythm! SCHEDULE: Chapter 1: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due September 8th Chapter 2: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due September 22nd Chapter 3: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due October 6th Chapter 4: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due October 20th Chapter 5: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due November 3rd Chapter 6: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due November 17th Chapter 7: Reading and End of Chapter Assignments due December 8th My intention is not to give an optional final exam during the Exam week at Lehman. I will prepare an exam covering chapters 2 to 7 so all of you can have an opportunity to review the material and show me some improvement over your assignments’ grades if you want to. GRADING SYSTEM The course grade will be based on the average of you scores in your reading and end of chapter assignments and the final exam if you do it. Letter grade for the course is based approximately on the following percentages: 0-59: F 60-69: D 70-79: 90-100: C A-, A 80-89: B Homework: Homework will be assigned throughout each chapter. ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT WILL BE DONE USING THE TOPHAT COURSE WEBPAGE. Late homework will be penalized. If you have an emergency, try to notify me ahead of the assignment due date. NO EXTRA CREDIT assignment(s) will be given to individual students make up for poor performance or failing grades. IMPORTANT TIPS I would suggest that you write down all your ASSIGNEMNT DUE DATES below (DOUBLE CHECK THE DATES IN TOPHAT) in your phone or computer calendar with reminders so you can be prepared and meet all deadlines to get the maximum points available and be on top of your work. It is highly recommended that you use EXCEL as much as you can to do the assignments since this will save you time and will help you to avoid silly mistakes. The book and the slides have tabulated tables to find and calculate probabilities and other concepts, but I would also try to see how to answer by learning how to use +Functions in EXCEL. Knowing EXCEL will help you find a job after you leave LEHMAN!!
