(Students will listen carefully)
determining the definitions of new and
unfamiliar words.
(Teacher will call someone if they raise
their hand, if not, proceed with discussion)
Before we proceed, who here is familiar
with what a dictionary and a thesaurus are?
What is a Dictionary?
A dictionary is an implement that lists
the words of a certain language
(usually in alphabetical order) and
provides the meanings of the words.
It also often includes information
regarding the pronunciation, origin
(etymology), and usage.
(The teacher will present an example of a
dictionary entry)

Tips For Proper Dictionary Usage
1. Never Give Up on the Preface
-
The
preface
is
often
an
(Each entry will be read by one student)
overlooked part of any book.
However,
in
this
case,
the
preface is your friend since it
contains explanations about the
various
symbols
and
abbreviations contained within
the dictionary.
2. Don’t
Stop
Believing
just
one
definition
-
When looking up a word in the
dictionary, make sure to read all
possible definitions of said word
since you must have the correct
context for your sentence.
3. Before You Go, look up the root word
-
Some
words
often
have
confusing prefixes, if you ever get
confused with a word that has a
prefix, make sure to look up the
root word so that you can fully
comprehend the meaning of the
word.
Other important elements
1. Guide Words
-
Words located on top of the page
to guide the reader in finding the
location of the word that they are
looking for.
-
The first guide word is the first
word listed on that specific page,

while the other guide word is the
last word listed on that page.
2. Main Entry
-
Main entries are the words that
are
being
defined
in
the
dictionary.
-
These words appear in boldface
text type, meaning that they have
(Each entry will be read by one student)
a darkened font.
3. Parts of Speech
- This is the category that a word
in the dictionary is ascribed in
accordance with its syntactic
function.
- Most dictionaries only have 8
parts of speech, however some
have 9. This is because the part
of speech verb, has been
bisected into transitive verb and
intransitive verb.
- The parts of speech often used
are noun, pronoun, verb,
adjective, adverb, conjunction,
interjection, and preposition.
4. Restrictive Labels
- Restrictive labels are divided
into 3 sub categories, Subject
Labels, Usage Labels, and
Geographic Labels.
1) Subject Labels
- Subject Labels are labels that
identify that a certain word has a
certain meaning in a certain
field.
2) Usage Labels
- Usage labels are labels that
indicate how a word is used.
3) Geographic Labels
- Geographic labels inform the
reader in what particular area of
the country a particular definition
applies to.
5. Spelling
- Knowing the proper spelling of
the word you are looking for can
help ensure that you find the
word within the dictionary.

Etymology
What is a Thesaurus?
- A thesaurus is a tool that lists
words that are grouped together
as
synonyms
or
related
concepts.
- Synonyms are words or phrases
that mean exactly the same or
are almost exactly the same.
- There are two forms that the
thesaurus comes in. These are
the dictionary form and the
traditional form.
1. Dictionary Form
- The dictionary form is where you
can simply look up the word as
you would if you were using a
dictionary.
- It also provides the antonym of
the entry word, meaning the
words that are the direct opposite
of the entry word.
2. Traditional Form
- The traditional form is one
wherein you have to look up the
word that you are looking for at
the back of the thesaurus, at the
alphabetical index
- The alphabetical index at the
back of a traditional thesaurus is
there to avoid unnecessary
repetition of words.
To summarize, a thesaurus is the opposite
of a dictionary. You use a dictionary when
you know the word but do not know the
definition. But you use a thesaurus when
you know the definition, but not the word.
