A dictionary is an implement that lists the words of a certain language (usually in alphabetical order) and provides the meanings of the words. Never Give Up on the Preface - The preface is often an (Each entry will be read by one student) overlooked part of any book. However, in this case, the preface is your friend since it contains explanations about the various symbols and abbreviations contained within the dictionary. 2. Don’t Stop Believing just one definition - When looking up a word in the dictionary, make sure to read all possible definitions of said word since you must have the correct context for your sentence. 3. Before You Go, look up the root word - Some words often have confusing prefixes, if you ever get confused with a word that has a prefix, make sure to look up the root word so that you can fully comprehend the meaning of the word. Main Entry - Main entries are the words that are being defined in the dictionary. - These words appear in boldface text type, meaning that they have (Each entry will be read by one student) a darkened font. 3. Parts of Speech - This is the category that a word in the dictionary is ascribed in accordance with its syntactic function. - Most dictionaries only have 8 parts of speech, however some have 9. This is because the part of speech verb, has been bisected into transitive verb and intransitive verb. - The parts of speech often used are noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, interjection, and preposition. 4. Restrictive Labels - Restrictive labels are divided into 3 sub categories, Subject Labels, Usage Labels, and Geographic Labels. 1) Subject Labels - Subject Labels are labels that identify that a certain word has a certain meaning in a certain field. 2) Usage Labels - Usage labels are labels that indicate how a word is used. 3) Geographic Labels - Geographic labels inform the reader in what particular area of the country a particular definition applies to. 5. Spelling - Knowing the proper spelling of the word you are looking for can help ensure that you find the word within the dictionary. These are the dictionary form and the traditional form. 1. Dictionary Form - The dictionary form is where you can simply look up the word as you would if you were using a dictionary. - It also provides the antonym of the entry word, meaning the words that are the direct opposite of the entry word. 2. Traditional Form - The traditional form is one wherein you have to look up the word that you are looking for at the back of the thesaurus, at the alphabetical index - The alphabetical index at the back of a traditional thesaurus is there to avoid unnecessary repetition of words. To summarize, a thesaurus is the opposite of a dictionary. You use a dictionary when you know the word but do not know the definition. But you use a thesaurus when you know the definition, but not the word.
