Very good, class!
Today, we will take a stand to some issues in the
Philippines.
To do this, we will be viewing again a short video clip.
Watch it carefully, make sure to take down notes to be
able to make your stand regarding the topic.
Yes, Sir!
Take note of these questions to serve as your guide.
Guide Questions:
1. What is the stand of the speaker? Cite some lines in
the video to justify your answer
2. What do you think are the bases of the speaker to
impose such actions?
3. What is your own stand for this?
Yes, Sir!
(Students’ answers may vary.)
Did you understand the video clip?
What does the video depict/show?
Sir, it is about President Duterte pushing the
renewal of Death Penalty in the Philippines due to
drug related crimes.
Very good!
To state your stand regarding the issue, you will be
working in groups. You have to write your stand on a
manila paper and present it in front of the class
afterwards. You may use signal words to indicate your
stand.
This group will be the Affirmative Side and this group
will be the Negative Side. Each group should listen to
other group while presenting their work and try to
assess or analyze their output and look for their best
argument by extracting lines which you think are
taking stand.
Assign a role for each members:
1. Facilitators
2. Researchers

Okay, class. Time is up! Let us see your work.
Sir, almost all the statements start with some signal
or key words to indicate whether they agree or not
to the give issue like “We/I believe…”, “We/I
think…”, “In my/our opinion...”
D. Lesson Proper
Now, let us analyze your work. What do you think is
common regarding your statements?
(Students’ answers may vary.)
I beg to disagree
I strongly believe
Very good! Very good observation, class.
Do you know other signal words that indicate whether
they agree or not? Can you name some?
Very good, class!
Take note of these. We have other signal words that we
can use whenever we take our stand over a certain
issue.
Signal Words
I think
I believe
I feel
In my opinion
My favorite
The best
I strongly believe
From my point of view
It’s my belief
Based on what I know
I am convinced
Speaking for myself
I know you will have to
I agree/disagree that
I am confident that
As far as I’m concerned
I’d like to point out
I totally disagree
I beg to differ
I’m afraid to disagree
That’s not always true
I’d say the exact opposite

Now that you know the signal words, I have here 6
pictures depicting certain issues local and international.
You have to choose 1 issue and state whether you agree
or disagree to it. Try to make your stand regarding
these by writing it on a ¼ sheet of paper in 3 minutes.
Make sure to use signal words in stating your stand.

together. You have to come up with a single stand
regarding the issue. It is either you agree or disagree.
Make sure to use signal words in stating your stand.
Write your stand on a manila paper provided to you.
You have 7 minutes to consolidate your answer as a
group and another 3 minutes to present your work.
(Students’ answers may vary.)
Sir, I think divorce should be legalized here in the
Philippines. We only have annulment in the country
which is a very long and expensive process. How
about those couples under the poverty lines who

partners because of waiting for their annulment? If
students go with their classmates having the same

the quality of life they deserve with another person.
Okay! Time is up! Let us see your work.

(Students’ answers may vary.)
Sir, it is my belief that same sex marriage should

Who chose Lowering the Age of Criminality?
Take your stand.
(Students’ answers may vary.)
None, Sir
Very good, class! Thank you for sharing.
Did you know that during early 1990’s in the USA,
taking a stand plays a vital role in the change of the
society? At that time, racial segregation laws required
African – American to give up their seat for white
passengers.
A certain Rosa Parks took against segregation. She did
not give up her seat for white passenger. She did not
stand. She remained sited. That began the Montgomery
Bus Boycott.
If you not, she took her stand by not standing. To take
a stand is not necessarily, speaking out ourselves (Students’ answers may vary.)
verbally, but it is to hold firmly to an opinion or belief.
To stand is to give your support to something. Rosa
Parks stood for something for something by siting
down.
Do you any other ways on how to take a stand?
Very good, class!
(Students’ answers may vary.)
Do you have any questions?
Very good everyone, class! Let us give a hand for
everybody.
