Who are Rohingya • The rohingyas are ethnic group, most of them are Muslim, who have lived for centuries in the majority Buddhist Myanmar. • Since 1982 the Rohingyas were deprived from their citizenship rights. They became the world’s largest stateless population. What is the origin of Rohingya It has basically started in Rakhine (Arakan) which is a state in Myanmar. It became in the year 2012 when a group of Rohingya men were accused of rape and murder of a Buddhist women. The Buddhist nationalist protested by burning the homes of Rohingyas. How did the crisis became so highlighted • During August 2017 there was an armed conflict in the Rakhine state that forced the Rohingya to move to the neighboring country Bangladesh. • This forced more than 700,000 people to get out of Myanmar, half of which were children and women. Why are Rohingya fleeing • The Burmese army forced the Rohingyas to leave Myanmar. Due to lack of proper human rights they fled. Majority of them looked for shelter in the neighboring country Bangladesh. • Many walked through the dense jungles and many decided their journey through the Bay of Bengal.
