Leadership Expectations The following is a list of qualifications for being a leader. Obviously, the primary qualification is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This list is to help you determine if you are being called by God to be a Young Life leader. What is a Volunteer Leader: To establish a relational foundation with adolescents in order to have the opportunity to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them. Qualifications: Love Jesus Christ Continue to grow in your own personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Love adolescents and desire to see them come to know Jesus Christ. Other Responsibilities: 1. MUST be a mature, growing Christian adult; at least one full year out of high school. 2. MUST have a hearts desire to reach high school kids for Christ. 3. MUST regularly attend a local church. 4. MUST be willing to use the gifts and abilities that God has given me. 5. MUST be willing to work within a team of Christians in ministry. 6. MUST be faithfully carrying out God’s call on their lives in other areas (i.e. school, job, relationships) 7. MUST be mature in developing peer relations and totally above reproach in relationships with member of the opposite sex 8. MUST be willing to grow in the skill and art of having meaningful relationships, especially relating to non-­‐ Christian high school students. 9. MUST be growing in their ability to disciple young people who respond to Christ. 10. MUST faithfully carry out the responsibilities of being a leader by: Ø Being a faithful member of the team Ø Being committed to spending a significant time each week with high school kids of the same sex on their turf, building new relationships and building existing ones. Ø Being committed to Leadership, Club and Campaigners each week. Ø If possible, attend a week long summer camp as a leader 11. MUST attend leadership weekends for training in YoungLife 12. MUST be placed on a team by the Area Director and be willing to submit to the Area Director and Club Team in all matters regarding YoungLife Time Required: 1. 4 hours per week at club and team meetings before and after club. Mondays-­‐ YoungLife-­‐ 6pm-­‐10pm Thursdays-­‐ WyldLife 6pm-­‐9pm 2.

2-­‐4 hours per week with kids doing contact work. 1-­‐2 hours per week with campaigners as needed. 4 hours a month at leadership meetings. (Every other Tuesday? Nights) 2 Weekend Leadership Retreats: Leadership weekend in Fall-­‐ August 31-­‐ September 1 6. If possible, attend Fall Weekend for Kids/ or a Summer Week Long Camp for kids. 7. Looking for a minimum of 2 year commitment Options: There may arise situations in which a leader cannot be committed to all these activities that are involved in being a leader, but is called by God to be involved. In these exceptional situations, the leader in question must work out an acceptable level of commitment with the Club Team and Area Director and be held accountable to this level of commitment. If no such arrangement is worked out it is assumed that all leaders are committed to all activities and contact work. We ask whatever time you do agree to give, that you give 100%. What Can I Expect in Return? 1. An opportunity to participate in a ministry that presents Jesus Christ to kids. 2. Support (prayer, encouragement & friendship) from an adult committee. 3. Lifelong ministry skills, including: Leading and sharing in small groups, Bible Study, communication and Christian counseling. 4. A trained YoungLife Staff who will love you and care for you-­‐ they will be available for counsel and pastoring. 5. The support and fellowship of a Christian community made up of peers and older adults from a variety of backgrounds yet life-­‐minded in mission and purpose 6. Opportunities of being befriended and being a friend to kids, parents, and adults on the YL committee. 7. In an affirming way, to be challenged, confronted and stretched in my faith by fellow workers from various backgrounds, abilities, and vocations.
