RHYTHM
th
20
During
century music, rhythm
is the most striking element of which
is used to provoke power, drive, and
excitement. It is a strong, regular,
repeated pattern of movement or
sound.
Polyrhythm (or the use of two or
more contrasting or independent
rhythms at the same time)
developed during this period.
Ostinato (or the constant repetition
of a group of pitches) was also used.
TEMPO
Tempo is the speed or pace of a
piece. A piece of music’s tempo is
typically written at the start of the
score, and in modern Western music
is usually indicated in beats per
minute (BPM).

MELODY
th
20
Melodies in
century music
are often fragmented, dissonant
and experimental. Melodies are
the tunes we remember from a
piece of music.
HARMONY
th
20
Harmony in the
century music is
often experimental and dissonant.
Harmony is the combination of
simultaneously sounded musical
notes to produce chords and chord
progressions having a pleasing effect.
TEXTURE
Polyphonic texture are often
used and music such as
impressionism
or
aleatory
music experiment with new
textures
using
layers
or
different sounds.
Monophonic texture has only one melodic
line, with no harmony or counterpoint.
Polyphonic texture, if more than one
independent melody is occurring at the
same time.
Homophonic texture has one clear
melodic line and the other parts provide
accompaniment.
TONE COLOR
The tone color plays a major
element of the music during the
th
20 century as it often creates
variation, progression, and
mood. Individual tone color is
clearly heard.
Tone color also known as the timbre
which refers to the quality of sound.
Timbre distinguishes different types
of sound production, such as choir
voices and musical instruments,
such as string instruments, wind
instruments, and percussion
instruments.
