functions
There are two functions of the male
reproductive system:
1.
The male reproductive system
produces gametes –specifically
sperm.
2. The male reproductive system
produces hormones – testosterone.
Testes/Testicles
• The primary organ of the male
reproductive system are the
testes.
• Males have two testes.
• The testes produce the male
gamete, sperm or spermatozoa.
• The testes produce testosterone.
Testosterone is the male sex
hormone. Testosterone controls
sperm production and male sexual
characteristics.
Testis
scrotum
• The testes are located
outside the body in an
external sac called the
scrotum.
• It is important that
testes are located
outside the body. The
scrotum protects the
testes.
Scrotum
epididymis
• Sperm produced in the
testes move into a
structure that
surrounds part of the
testes.
• This structure is called
the epididymis.
Sperm fully mature and
are stored in the
epididymis.
Epididymis
Sperm ducts
• The sperm ducts are fine
tubes that connect the testes
to the urethra.
• The sperm ducts travel over
the bladder and merge with
the urethra in a gland called
the prostate.

Sperm
Ducts
The prostate produces fluid
called seminal fluid which mixes
with sperm.
Seminal fluid nourishes and
protects sperm.
Prostate
Seminal vesicles
The seminal vesicles also
produce seminal fluid and
protect the sperm.
The sperm ducts pass by the
seminal vesicles before the
prostate.

Semen
Semen is the mixture of the
seminal fluids and sperm.
urethra
The urethra is a tube that
carries sperm, as well as urine,
to the penis.
It travels through the penis
and expels fluid outside the
male body.
Urethra
Penis
• Sperm leaves the male’s
body through the penis.
• Smooth muscles line the
glands of the reproductive
system. The muscles contract
to eject sperm out of the
body through the penis.
