FAULTS/PROBLEMS IN A COMPUTER SYSTEM
Learning Objectives:
After reading the Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. Identify different parts of a Computer systems.
2. Analyze the faults/problems and its possible solutions.
3. Apply your learnings in the troubleshooting process.
Introduction/Overview:
Computers are very common property that we have at the present times due of
technological era. Many of us only knows how to use a computer/devices but did not know how to
fix it when we encounter some bugs or problems. On the other hand, fixing problems in our
computer systems was difficult but these steps or procedures in troubleshooting can be learned. In
many cases, if we face difficulties in our computer systems, we call a technician, but we can also be a
technician. Having knowledge and skills in maintaining and repairing a computer systems and
networks was a blessing to nurture. Technicians or not, we should be familiar to the faults of a
computer and on how to fix these faults.
FAULTS/PROBLEMS IN A COMPUTER SYSTEMS
COMPUTER SYSTEMS
Computer system is a basic but complete and functional software and hardware setup
which is a set of united devices that allows the user to input, process, store, and execute data to
become information. (Techopedia) It is a digital electronic machine that was created to perform
different functions or operations depending to the set of instructions that the user may input in our
computer. The computer system has a physical components which is commonly called as hardware
and a software or computer programs. These both components are important for the computer to
function. The physical components contains the computer itself, system unit, and all peripherals
such as mouse, keyboard, fan, motherboard, RAM, ROM, HDD, CD-ROM, and etc.

COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM
Computer Hardware or Physical Components
These are the physical or the solid parts of a computer system. Computer hardware have
main components such as Input, Processing, Storage, and Output devices.
INPUT DEVICES
These are the devices that is used for entering data to the central processing unit (CPU) to
deliver the data to the software or operating system of our computer systems.
i.
Keying Devices – A set of keys like Keyboard or keypad to enter/input data. It is the
main input device of a computer system which is used to type a variables or numbers.
ii.
Pointing Devices – These are the devices which has a pointer to enter the data that we
can see in our computer screen. When we input data, we can point or click them through
mouse, trackballs, joystick, and touch sensitive screen.
a. Mouse – It is an input device used to control the movements of the cursor in the
computer screen to select and click files or documents.
b. Trackballs – It is also used to control the cursor which has a ball to be touched.
c. Joystick – It is commonly used in computer games to move different objects or
character in a computer/devices.
d. Touch sensitive screen – It is a computer display screen which can tap or click by
the user to move objects and to input data in our computer.
iii.
Scanning Devices – These are used to capture a document to get the data directly.
Examples of this devices are Scanners, Barcode readers, Optical character readers, and
Magnetic readers.
a. Scanners – These are used to convert images or printed data into an electronic data
that can be store to the computer by scanning the documents. We can use Flatbed
scanner, all-in-one scanner, drum scanner, and handheld scanner.
b. Barcode readers – It is also called a price scanner that is used to read and scan
information in a barcode.

FAULTS IN A COMPUTER SYSTEM WITH POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
In the table below, we can see the different faults in a computer system and its possible solution to
fix those problems.
FAULTS / PROBLEMS
1. The Computer won’t start
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
Check if the computer is plugged in to the
power supply properly and if not, plug the
computer. Otherwise, test the power supply
with another working computer to confirm if it
will work or not.
2. PC Overheating
Check the fan or the cooling system if there’s
something that blocks the air like dust and to
know if it works properly, if not, immediately
change the fan.
3. PC Beeps
Get the RAM from the MOBO and clean any dirt
inside the slot using any soft cloth and insert
back the RAM while putting enough pressure
on both ends to ensure if it was fit properly on
its slot.
4. PC Fans not working
Open up the PC and use a leaf blower to clean
up the fans and other components. Otherwise,
if damaged, change the fan immediately.
