Do you know what are they? Yes/No, teacher Verbal is a verb acting as other parts of speech such as nouns and adjectives. What do you think is the gerund in the sentence? Okay, very good. Listening Listening is the verb but not function as a verb in this sentence, it is the noun. Makes is the predicate and listening is the thing(noun) that makes the speaker happy. Let’s have another example. Everybody read. What is the gerund in the sentence? Very good! The gerund playing is used as a noun. Kelvin loves playing baseball. Playing Teacher Activity Student Activity Let us proceed to participle. Everybody kindly read the definition. They are two types of participle. The present Participle is –ing or –ed verb acting as an participle (ending –ing) and the past participle adjective. usually ending –ed. Here are some participle examples being used as adjectives. Everybody kindly read. “the baking bread” – Present Participle “the baked bread” – Past Participle In this phrase, baking and baked is the participle which describes the bread. Another example. Kindly read. The baby, tired from a long day of play, cried without end. Cried is the action or predicate in the sentence and tired from a long day of play is the participle phrase that is describing the baby. Lastly the infinitives. Everybody kindly read the definition. An infinitive is a verb formed that generally appears with the word –to plus the verb formed and acts as a noun or adjective. Example: The delivery man was waiting to drop off the package. What do you think is the infinitive in the sentence? To drop The action or predicate in the sentence is was waiting (verb phrase). Delivery man is the subject. To drop off is the thing that the delivery man is waiting so it’s functions as a noun. Any confusion about the lesson? No, teacher D.Enrichment Activity We will have a group activity.
