magnetic fields, Ampere's Law; Faraday's Law; inductance; magnetic properties of matter. Prerequisites:
PHYS 130 or 146, and MATH 100 or 113 or 114 or 117. Pre- or corequisite: MATH 101 or 115 or 118. For
Science students only: SCI 100 may be used in lieu of PHYS 146, MATH 114 and 115. Note: Restricted to
Engineering students. Other students who take this course will receive *3.0. Credit may normally be
obtained for only one of PHYS 230 or 281.
Policy regarding course outlines can be found in Sec. 23.4(2) of the University Calendar.
Instructor:
Email:
Prof. Kim Chow

Course Websites:
(i) eClass & (ii) https://sites.ualberta.ca/~khchow
In order to find the website listed in (ii), students can either reach it from eClass or Google “Kim Chow"
(usually #1 or #2 in the search results). Then click on “Phys 230” link under “Courses” on the left frame.
Prerequisites & Corequisites: See calendar description.
Students who hope to receive credit for the course, but who do not have the necessary prerequisites, may be
required to fill out a “Waiver of Prerequisite” form to be considered.
Lectures: M W F: 11:00 am – 11:50 am. Classroom: ETLC E1-013. If you miss a class, you are
responsible for obtaining notes and announcements from a colleague.
Office (CCIS 3-187) Hours: See course website.
Optional/Recommended Textbook:
University Physics with Modern Physics by Young and Freedman (Pearson). (The 15th edition is the latest.)
Mark Distribution: Labs: 15 %
Assignments: 15 %
Midterm Exam: 20 %
Final Exam: 50 %
The final letter grades will be given according to the University of Alberta Marking and Grading Guideline
(with an average GPA for the class of about 2.8). The absolute percentage required for a particular letter grade
varies each year and depends on a combination of exam difficulty, the location of breaks in the course mark
distribution, and the instructor's assessment on how well the student performed based on prior experience
with similar courses.
Assignments:
Assignments will be posted and graded on-line via eClass. An assignment will be based on the end-ofchapter problems in the textbook. I plan to announce their posting in class and/or on the course website a
1
minimum of one week prior to the due date. Late assignments will be given a score of zero unless there is
a valid excuse. There will be approximately 10 graded assignments. One of these graded assignments, i.e.,
with the lowest score, will be dropped during the calculation of the final grades.
Laboratory:
Students who fail the laboratory component (achieves a lab score of less than 50%) will automatically fail
the course (receive an F for the course) regardless of his/her performance in the other components
(assignments, midterm, final). i.e., Students must independently pass the lab component in order to pass the
entire course.
Note that the labs are run separately from the lectures. Hence, if a student has lab-related questions, e.g.
scheduling, grading, administrative, etc., it is probably best to ask lab personnel, such as the lab TA,
coordinator, etc.
Examination Schedule and Information:
1. Midterm Exam: The midterm is scheduled for Wed Mar 01 2023 and will be written in-class (midterm
instead of the lecture).
2. Final Exam: According to Bear Tracks, Mon Apr 17 2023 starting at 2:00 pm. It will be a 3 hour exam.
Confirm this information when the official exam schedule is posted.
You will be allowed one self-made 8.5 x 11 inch (letter) formula sheet for the midterm exam, and two selfmade 8.5 x 11 inch (letter) formula sheets for the final exam. You can write/type/photocopy anything you
want on both sides of each sheet. Electronic devices must be shut off during exams. Students must work by
themselves on the exams. Be sure to follow the rules for the exams; not doing so is considered a breach of the
Code of Student Behavior.
Your student photo I.D. may be required at exams to verify your identity.
Calculator Policy: Only approved non-programmable calculators affixed with the appropriate sticker are
allowed in the exams. The list of allowed calculators and the procedure for obtaining the appropriate stickers
can be found at the following link
https://www.ualberta.ca/engineering/student-services/student-policies/calculator-use-specifications.html
Using an improper calculator or other devices/software in an exam is considered a violation of the Code of
Student Behavior.
Additional Information:
Refer to the University Calendar for additional regulations. Sec 23.5 of the University Calendar has
additional information on examinations. In case of discrepancy between the summary of these pages and the
information in the Calendar, the Calendar takes precedence.
Missed Midterm: No make-up exams will be given for a missed midterm.
A student who cannot complete the midterm due to incapacitating illness, severe domestic affliction or other
compelling reasons (including missing an in-person assessment due to the requirement to self-isolate when
experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or with a positive test result) can apply for an excused absence. To apply
for an excused absence, you must contact the instructor within two working days of missing the assessment
or as soon as possible. If an excused absence is granted, then the weight of the mid-term will be added to that
of the final exam to calculate the final grade. An excused absence is a privilege and not a right. There is no
2
guarantee that an absence will be excused. Misrepresentation of facts to gain an excused absence is a serious
breach of the Code of Student Behaviour. In all cases, instructors may request adequate documentation to
substantiate the reason for the absence at their discretion.
Deferred Final Exam:
A student who cannot write the final examination due to incapacitating illness, severe domestic affliction or
other compelling reasons (including missing the in-person examination due to the requirement to self-isolate
when experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or with a positive test result) can apply for a deferred final
examination. Such an application must be made to the student’s Faculty office within two working days of
the missed examination and must be supported by appropriate documentation or a Statutory Declaration
(calendar.ualberta.ca/content.php?catoid=34&navoid=10107#attendance). Deferred examinations are a
privilege and not a right; there is no guarantee that a deferred examination will be granted.
Misrepresentation of facts to gain a deferred examination is a serious breach of the Code of Student
Behaviour.
Unless the student and instructor are able to mutually agree on a different date/time/location, the date for the
deferred exam is Saturday May 27th 2023, starting at 9 a.m., in CCIS L1-047.
Reexaminations: A student who writes the final examination and fails the course may apply for a
reexamination. Reexaminations are rarely granted in the Faculty of Science. These exams are governed by
University and Faculty of Science Regulations (see Calendar for details). Misrepresentation of Facts to gain
a reexamination is a serious breach of the Code of Student Behaviour.
University Policy regarding Academic Offences:
“The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty.
Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the

offence and can result in suspension or expulsion from the University.”
All forms of academic dishonesty are unacceptable at the University. Any suspected offence will be
reported to the Faculty of Science. Anyone who is found in violation of the Code of Student Behaviour may
receive a sanction. Typical sanctions include conduct probation, a mark reduction or a mark of 0 on an
