DNA , the genes and chromosomes When we were conceived we received 23 chromosomes from each of our parents. Each parent gave a sex cell (called a gamete) which joined together to form a “zygote”. ( a zygote is the moment of conception and is the very first cell). Inside this cell there were 46 chromosomes (23 + 23) in the nucleus. Each of these chromosomes have many “genes” in them. These genes determine many things about us; for example 1. What colour eyes we have 2. Whether we can roll our tongue 3. Certain aspects of our personality.
