SCIENTISTS CONTRIBUTIONS Dr. Salcedo has a number of scientific papers cited in reviews and textbooks of biochemistry, health and nutrition. He developed “Enriched Rice,” a rice variety fortified with vitamin B1, which helps prevent beriberi. He spent most of his lifetime study health factors and published several articles all in order to shape the nation in a better social and economic state. Dr. Juan S. Salcedo, Jr . Dr. Alfredo C. Santos Dr. Alfredo C. Santos pioneered studies in the isolation and elucidation (or identifying the chemical structure) of chemical components from indigenous Philippine plants. His findings showed that certain medicinal plants can address various health problems and symptoms, such as inflammation, high blood pressure and tuberculosis. He worked hard for the purpose of finding cheaper natural alternatives as imported medicine which the country heavily relied on foreign medicinal technology. Dr. Fe Del Mundo was a known Filipino pediatrician and is credited with studies that led to the invention of an improved incubator and a device to treat jaundice. In her service, she founded a major children’s hospital and she had once said that she would rather go home and help the children with the knowledge that she gained in Harvard. What pushed her to pursue this career was the death of her older sister from appendicitis. Dr. Fe Del Mundo Dr. Dioscoro L. Umali was a Filipino agriculturalist and National Scientist of the Philippines awardee, known as "the Father of Philippine Plant Breeding. He specialized in plant breeding and he was recognized for his advancement in rice and corn. His research output and writings paved the way for the launching of programs of rainfed and upland agriculture, social forestry, environment conservation and rural poverty. Dr. Dioscoro L. Umali Dr. Carmen C. Velasquez was one of the few experts on fish parasitology. She published a pioneering book titled Digenetic Trematodes of Philippine Fishes. This book provides a comprehensive summary of the classification, structure, life histories and distribution of known digenetic trematodes of Philippine fishes. Dr. Carmen C. Velasquez Dr. Francisco O. Santos Dr. Santos’s work was predominantly focused on improving the condition of nutrition and diet in the Philippines this was because he believed the progress of a country is largely dependent on the health and well-being of its citizens. One of Dr. Santos’ most important discoveries was his study on sweet potatoes, including their shoots and leaves. He found that they have properties that may combat beriberi, a potentially lifethreatening condition caused by vitamin-B deficiency Dr. Castillo found out in her research that Filipino farmers are not resistant to new technologies. She also claimed that the Filipino extended family system is a constant source of moral support and solidarity. Her work has been a voice for the underprivileged and underrepresented rungs of society, helping people who would have otherwise stayed trapped in the cycles of poverty that plague much of Philippine society. Dr. Gelia T. Castillo Dr. Ramon Barba is a well-known Filipino scientist, especially to agriculturally involved individuals in the Philippines for contributing towards advancements in the mango industry. He developed a process that caused the flowering and fruiting of mango trees three times a year, instead on once a year, so dramatically improving yields. His inspiration to study in this field came from his grandfather, Juan Cabanas, who was then an official of the Bureau of Plants and Industry. Dr. Ramon C. Barba Dr. Clara was a Filipino chemist who was granted the title of National Scientist of the Philippines in 1994Her books are used as textbooks in college chemistry courses in many schools throughout the country. She was a chemist dedicated to education. Dr. Clara Y. Lim-Sylianco Dr. Clare R. Baltazar Dr. Clare Baltazar is recognized for her contributions on the research on Philippine insects. Her discovery of the Philippine-endemic Hymenoptera species is important for biological insect control applications. Dr. Baltazar is well renowned here and out of the country. She accepted the Rizal Pro Patria Award in Entomology in 1980.
