Al-Fajr
Translation
Reading
89:15
<ۙ۬ ‫ﲝن اِذَا َﻣﺎ اﺑْﺘَﻠٰى ُﻪ َرﺑُّ ٗﻪ ﻓَﺎَ ْﻛ َﺮ َﻣ ٗﻪ َوﻧَ َّﻌﻤَ ٗﻪ‬
ِ ْ ‫ﻓَﺎَ ّﻣَﺎ‬
ُ ‫اﻻﻧْ َﺴ‬
ؕ۟ ‫ﰉْ ا َ ْﻛ َﺮ َﻣ ِﻦ‬
ۤ ّ ِ ‫ﻓَﻴَﻘ ُْﻮ ُل َر‬
Now, whenever a human being is tested by
their Lord through ˹His˺ generosity and
blessings, they boast, “My Lord has
˹deservedly˺ honoured me!”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
[The nature of] man is that, when his Lord
tries him through honour and blessings, he
says, ‘My Lord has honoured me,’
— Abdul Haleem

As for man, when his Lord tests him by
exalting him and bestowing His bounties
upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted
me.”

Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him,
giving him honour and gifts, then saith he,
(puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."

ۤ ّ ِ ‫َﻠ َﻴْ ِﻪ ِر ْزﻗَ ٗﻪ ۬ۙ< ﻓَﻴَﻘ ُْﻮ ُل َر‬K ‫َوا َ َّﻣﺎ ۤ اِذَا َﻣﺎ اﺑْﺘَﻠٰى ُﻪ ﻓَﻘ ََﺪ َر‬
ْ‫ﰉ‬
ۚ۟ ‫ا َ َﻫﺎ ﻧَ ِﻦ‬
But when He tests them by limiting their
provision, they protest, “My Lord has
˹undeservedly˺ humiliated me!”
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
but when He tries him through the
restriction of his provision, he says, ‘My Lord
has humiliated me.’
— Abdul Haleem
But when He tests him by straitening his
sustenance, he says: “My Lord has

humiliated me.”
Footnote
This then is man’s materialistic view of
life. He regards the wealth and position
and power of this world alone as
everything. When he has it, he is filled
with pride and says God has honored
me; and when he fails to obtain it, he
says: God has humiliated me. Thus, the
criterion of honor and humiliation in his
sight is the possession of wealth and
position and power, or the absence of it,
whereas the truth which he does not
understand is that whatever Allah has
given anybody in the world has been
given for the sake of a trial. If he has
given him wealth and power, it has been
given for a trial to see whether he
becomes grateful for it, or commits
ingratitude. If he has made him poor, in
this too there is a trial for him to see
whether he remains content and patient
in the will of God and faces his
hardships bravely within permissible
bounds, or becomes ready to transgress
every limit of morality and honesty and
starts cursing his God.

But when He trieth him, restricting his
subsistence for him, then saith he (in
despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"

ۙ۟ ‫ﻴْ َﻢ‬Wِ َ‫َ َّﻼ ﺑَ ْﻞ َّﻻ ﺗُ ْﳉ ِﺮ ُﻣ ْﻮ َن اﻟْﻴ‬R
Absolutely not! In fact, you are not ˹even˺
gracious to the orphan,
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
No indeed! You [people] do not honour
orphans,
— Abdul Haleem

But no; you do not treat the orphan

honourably,

That is, this is not all the criterion of
honor and disgrace, for the real criterion
is the moral good and evil.

ِ ‫َ ٰ] َﻃ َﻌ‬K ‫َو َﻻ ﺗَ ٰ ٓﺤ ُّﻀ ْﻮ َن‬
ِ ْ ‫ﺎم اﻟْ ِﻤ ْﺴ ِﻜ‬
nor do you urge one another to feed the
poor.

you do not urge one another to feed the
poor,

and do not urge one another to feed the

Footnote
That is, nobody in your society feels any
urge to feed the poor. Neither a man
himself feels inclined to feed a hungry
person, nor is there among the people
any urge to do something to satisfy the
hunger of the hungry, nor do they exhort
one another to do so.

And you devour ˹others’˺ inheritance

greedily,

you consume inheritance greedily,

and greedily devour the entire inheritance,

and love wealth fervently.

Enough! When the earth is entirely crushed
over and over,

No indeed! When the earth is pounded to
dust, pounded and pounded,

and your Lord comes ˹to judge˺ with angels,
rank upon rank,

‫ﲝن َوا َ ّٰﱏ‬
ِ ْ ‫ﺎی َء ﻳَ ْﻮ َﻣى ِٕ ٍﺬۭ ﺑِ َﺠ َﻬﻨَّ َﻢ ۬ۙ< ﻳَ ْﻮ َﻣى ِٕ ٍﺬ ﻳَّﺘَ َﺬ َّﻛ ُﺮ‬
ُ ‫اﻻﻧْ َﺴ‬
ْٓ ‫َو ِﺟ‬
ؕ۟ ‫اﻟﺬ ْﻛ ٰﺮی‬
ِ ّ ‫ﻟَ ُﻪ‬
and Hell is brought forth on that Day—this is
when every ˹disbelieving˺ person will
remember ˹their own sins˺. But what is the
use of remembering then?

when Hell is that Day brought near- on that
Day man will take heed, but what good will
that be to him then?
— Abdul Haleem
and when Hell is brought near that Day. On
that Day will man understand, but of what

avail will that understanding be?

And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),on that Day will man remember, but how will
that remembrance profit him?
