Introduction to IELTS Instructor: Raheem Abdulkareem NOVEMBER , 2021 IELTS MODULES AND COMPONENTS HOW DIFFICULT IS THE IELTS? How difficult do people say the IELTS is? What’s your opinion? For people who have spoken and studied in English over many years, the IELTS should be easy. JUST ADAPT! MOTIVATION OVER FEAR After all the preparation, do not let fear rob you of your success. It’s ok to be a little nervous; look on the positive side. Be confident! OVERCOMING NERVOUSNESS Adequate preparation Get a good sleep before the test day Arrive early Use the restroom before you step into the test hall Clear your mind of what was and will be, See only the task at hand. THE IELTS IS VERY EASY FOR THOSE THAT HAVE STUDIED IN ENGLISH OVER THE YEARS. AND THAT’S A FACT. IELTS LISTENING Duration: 30 minutes Parts: 4 Number of Questions: 10 questions in each part (Total =40) You will be given a headphone You will listen to four recordings which are a mix of monologues and conversations from a range of native speakers (or accents) You will only hear the recording once. IELTS LISTENING PART 1 A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context. PART 2 A monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities. PART 3 A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment. PART 4 lecture. A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university IELTS LISTENING BAND SCORE IELTS LISTENING ANSWER SHEET While you listen to the recording, write or tick your answers in the questions paper. In paperbased tests, You’ll be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer booklet. That’s enough time “Pencil is recommended for the IELTS Listening, Reading, and Writing tests. This is because tests are scanned and work best with pencil. It also means that you can easily erase and rewrite words. If you forget to bring a pencil, the test centre will provide one for you” IELTS-IDP You can write your answers in lower or uppercase. If you choose lowercase, remember that proper nouns are an exeption; they must start with a capital letter. IELTS READING ANSWER SHEET Unlike listening, you won’t be any time to transfer your answers to the answer booklet. So, write your answers directly in the answer booklets. In the reading tests, you can write your answers in lower or uppercase. If you choose lowercase, remember than proper nouns are an exception; they must start with a capital letter. IELTS READING BAND SCORE IELTS READING: TIPS Instructions (read carefully) Time management Identify/Underline keywords IELTS WRITING Duration: 60 minutes TASKS: 2 Task 1 You will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style. Task 2 You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You will support your point of view with relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. IELTS WRITING: TASK 1 Task 1 You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. You live in a room in college which you share with another student. However, there are many problems with this arrangement and you find it very difficult to work. Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In the letter, • describe the situation • explain your problems and why it is difficult to work • say what kind of accommodation you would prefer. Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses. Begin your letter as follows: Dear Sir or Madam, IELTS WRITING: TASK 2 Task 2 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: In Britain, when someone gets old they often go to live in a home with other old people where there are nurses to look after them. Sometimes the government has to pay for this care. Who do you think should pay for this care, the government or the family? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words IELTS WRITING ANSWER SHEET IELTS WRITING ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Task response Sufficiently address all parts of the task Present a well-developed response to the question with relevant, extended and supported ideas Coherence and cohesion Sequences information and ideas logically Manage all aspects of cohesion well Use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately Grammatical range and accuracy Use a wide range of structures (simple, compound and complex sentences) Error-free sentences Makes only very occasional errors or inappropriacies Lexical resource Use a wide range of vocabulary fluently and flexibly to convey precise meanings. Skillfully uses uncommon lexical items Choose word and collocations accurately Avoid errors in spelling and/or word formation. IELTS SPEAKING: TEST FORMAT Duration: 11 - 15 minutes PARTS: 3 Part 1 includes your document (ID) check, some warm up, introduction questions and then questions about on 2 different topics related to you and your life. Part 2 is a long turn where you have 1 to 2 minutes to talk about a topic you will be given in the test. You have 1 minute to prepare. Part 3 is a deeper conversation based on the topic you talked about in Part 2. ASSIGNMENT Take a listening test (test video will be sent to you). Share your experience in the next class. THANKS
