“The Examination Day” by Julia Bauerschmidt Critique I was blow away right after I finished reading a fiction story called “The Examination Day.” It was a short story written by Julia Bauerschmidt about the secret job of a lady and how her nephew caused her to reveal her secret. The story was a great example of a wellwritten, entertaining story, and it brought a bit of challenge to the reader. Starting with the title, the author described part of the setting. The title brought curiosity to me because I didn’t exactly know what kind of examination the lady’s nephew was taking. After reading half of the story, I realized that the author gives the reader the freedom to draw a conclusion about the character and plot. The end of the story made sense, like a piece of a puzzle had been found. It makes the plot exciting and proves that it is original and well-developed. The examination turned out to be connected to the government, making me understand the characteristics of the lady. Her job is not ordinary, which is the reason why she’s always busy and secretive about it. Ultimately, her family will find out about her work and life. There were no unnecessary plots because they are all needed for the reader to perceive and feel what the author wants them to handle. Moreover, the story provides insight and tells people that no secrets can be kept hidden and that not having much time with your family can greatly affect your relationship with them. It’s amazing how a concise and thrilling story can convey many messages. The writer did a great job using various techniques to lead a reader to a better understanding after all the suspicious things that happened. The story wasn't straightforward. The author tells the reader what is happening and still leaves enough room for their imagination. The author's unique writing style makes the reader feel what she wants us to like: the thrill, curiosity, and suspicion that prove that this story is exceptional and worthy of anyone's attention.
