PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Some new developments at the very end of the semester have caused me to need to be clear and explicit about expectations for the final assignment with regard to ChatGPT and other forms of AI. I recommend not using AI for class assignments at this time because I think the pitfalls are currently likely to be greater and also of greater risk than the advantage you gain. But I also believe we will, over time, find ways to use AI productively without simply using it as crutch and without being academically dishonest. As you will note, below I have not prohibited you from using AI. But you must cite that as a source like any other source in order to be academically honest. General Statement on Use of AI In all academic work, the ideas and contributions of others must be appropriately acknowledged and work that is presented as original must be, in fact, original. Using an AIcontent generator (such as ChatGPT) to complete coursework without proper attribution or authorization is a form of academic dishonesty. If you are unsure about whether something may be plagiarism or academic dishonesty, please contact your instructor to discuss the issue. Faculty, students, and administrative staff all share the responsibility of ensuring the honesty and fairness of the intellectual environment. (Excerpted from Constructing a Syllabus: A Checklist by Washington University in St. Louis Center for Teaching and Learning) Attribution To be consistent with our scholarly values, students must cite any AI-generated material that informed their work and use quotation marks or other appropriate indicators of quoted material when appropriate. Students should indicate how AI tools informed their process and the final product, including how you validated any AI-generated citations, which may be invented by the AI. (Also from University of Iowa Statement) To be sure the last sentence is completely clear, I want to say this another way. AI can and often does make up journal articles to use as citations. Attribution of AI in ECO 390 Provide the name(s) of the AI platforms you use. Provide the prompts you use to obtain answers from AI. Put quotations in quotation marks. Use a within text cite, e.g. (ChatGPT) when the main idea of a sentence of paragraph is taken from AI even when it is not a direct quote. Detection of Use of AI For the sake of transparency, please know that AI detection apps are readily available.
