INTRODUCTION
SIWES is an integral part of the academic
curriculum of all practical-oriented courses of
study in Nigeria Universities and Polytechnics. It
aim to provide opportunity to apply acquired
knowledge to actual practice

ABOUT THE COMPANY
Ogun state Geological Service Department is a department
under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment. It is a
body responsible for monitoring and the inspection of mining
activities going on in the state under the Ministry of Industry
Trade and Investment, with core mandate that include:
• Policy formation
• Generation of revenue
• Carry out investigation, inspection and documenation.
• Exploration.

MY SIWES EXPERIENCE
I worked with my supervisors in the Geological service
department to carry out inspection work to mining site in
some local government in OGUN State. We carry out the
following inspection throughout my learning period:
• Inspection and investigation of laterite mining site
• Inspection of quartz mining sites
• Inspection and Investigation of kaolin mining site
• Inspection of Sand Dredging Companies in Obafemi owode
local government
• A visit to an abandoned quarry site

Inspection and investigation of laterite mining site
It is located at Obafemi
Owode LG. The laterites are
excavated for Industrial use
which include; production of
ceramic, brick making,
leveling up undulating land
scape and it's used as
basement soil to lay asphalt
for road construction.

Inspection and Investigation of kaolin mining site
Kaolin, also called china
clay, soft white clay that is
an essential ingredient in
the manufacture of china
and porcelain and is widely
used in the making of
paper, rubber, paint, and
many other products.

MY SIWES EXPERIENCE
A visit to an abadoned quarry site
The quarry is located at Saje, Abeokuta.
Exposures seen include:
• Artificial pond (created for collection of water
from the rocks)
• Big outcrop comprising of Granite, Migmatite
Gneiss and Porphyritic Granite. The migmatite
gneiss is an intrusion that displace the Granite
from the porphyritic granite

CONCLUSION
the SIWES of the 2020/2021 academic year was
educative and overwhelming to me. It provided the
platform that made me a better trainee Miner in the
aspects of improved capacity, safety, leadership and
teamwork. The experience I gained has given me a
clear career perspective.

RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that the duration for SIWES should be
increased because most companies are looking for IT
student that can stay between three to six month.
