Buying Winkles
Cora AunMe
Quotes
Spare me sixpence
I’d dash from the ghosts on the stairs
where the bulb had blown
Moon was in the strip of sky between the
tall houses
The winkles would be wet and glistening
blue like little night skies themselves
A pram loaded
I’d see light in golden mirrors
I envied each soul in the hot interior
The sweetest extra winkle that brought
the sea to me
I’d bear the newspaper twists bulging fat
with winkles proudly home like torches

They are sewing red sequins the women to
the hem of her white satin dress Sequins
red as berries
The light of those stars only reaching me
now
In cracks and crannies
The coinage the sudden glamour of an
emigrant soul
The exact moment I
became a poet
Rapping the duster on the easel’s peg half
obscured by a cloud of chalk
That those words end up robbed the
labour of its dignity
Getting sewn up the way my granny
dewed the sage and onion stuffing in the
birds Words could pluck you leave you
naked your lovely shiny feathers all gone

My Father Perceived
as a vision of St.
Francis
Poetry quotes and themes 2023
Bottles chinked on the doorstep the first
bus pulled up to the stop, the rest of the
house slept
The first frost whitened the slates of the
estate
He was older than I had reckoned his hair
completely silver

The garden was pandemonium when my
father threw up his hands and tossed the
crumbs to the air
He was suddenly radiant a perfect vision
of St. Francis made whole made young
again in a Finglas garden
Prayer for the
Children Of Longing
Still rich with the sap of the forest
Grant us the forest’s silence
The snow’s breathless quiet
The scream the siren the knock on the
door
In that silence let us catch the breath of
the children of longing
The streets that couldn’t shelter them that
spellbound them in alleyway’s Here at the
heart of winter
Here at the heart of the city
Them Ducks Died for Time slides slowly down the sash window
Ireland
The green is a great lung
And once made mirror to smoke and fire
Licked the wounds of history
We’ll salute the stretcher bearer the nurse
in white the ones who pick up the pieces
Fragile as a breath mark on the
windowpane

Quotes
There’s a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn
tonight
Wink and elbow language of delight
No shadow thrown that might turn out a
man or women I have what every poet
hates in spite
Of all the solemn talk of contemplation
I am king of banks and stones and every
blooming thing
My black hills have never seen the sun
rising
Eternally they look north towards Armagh
Black hills that are happy when drawn
whitens glassdrummond chapel
They are my alps and I have climbed the
Matterhorn with a sheaf of hay for three
perishing calves
The sleety winds fondle the rushy beards
of shancoduff
A poet? Then by heavens he must be poor
I hear and is my heart not badly shaken
Themes

I have lived in important places, times
when great events were decided
I heard the Duffy’s shouting damn your
soul and old mc Cabe stripped to the waist
That was the year of the Munich bother
I made the Iiad from such a local row gods
make their own importance
Ordinary to extraordinary
Heroic deeds and events
On raglan road
That her dark hair would weave a share
that I might one day be
Of the deep ravine where can be seen the
worth of passions pledge On a quiet street
where the old ghosts meet I see her
walking now Away from me so hurriedly

Poetry quotes and themes 2023
An art lovers woe
The common and banal her heat can know
This is what love does to things: rialto
bridge the main gate that was bent by a
heavy lorry Naming these things is the
love act and its pledge
Snatch out of time the passionate
transitory
Lines wriZen on a
seat on the grand
canal
O commemorate me where there is water
So stilly greeny at the heart of summer
Where by a lock of niagarously roars
The falls for those who sit in the
tremendous silence A swan goes by head
low with many apologies
Role of poet
Remembrance
O commemorate me with no hero
courageous Tomb just a canal bank seat
for the passer-by
From Great Hunger
Clay is the word and clay is the flesh
Is there some light of imagination in these
wet clods
Or why do we stand here shivering
The drills slipped by and the days slipped
by
His dream changes like the cloud-Swung
wind
The fools of life bleed if they climb over
Be easy October, no cackle hen, horse,
neigh, tree sough, duck quack

The stares nest by

Quotes
My wall is loosening
We are closed in and the key is turned
On our uncertainty somewhere
Come build in the empty house of the
stare We had fed the heart on fantasies
The heart’s grown brutal from the fare.

Passion or conquest wander where they

Delight men’s eyes when I awake some

Add the halfpence to the pence
To pray and save
Yet they were of a different kind

They have gone about the world like wind

The Fish
Quotes
Tremendous fish
He didn’t fight
He hadn’t fought at all
He hung a grunting weight battered and
venerable and homely
Themes
Resilience
Self-Worth
Freedom
He was speckled with barnacles fine
rosettes of lime and infested That can cut
so badly
I thought of the coarse white flesh packed
in like feathers
Hung five old pieces of fish-line
The Prodigal
QuesMons of travel
Like medals with their ribbons frayed and
wavering
A five-haired beard of wisdom trailing
from his aching jaw Until everything was
rainbow, rainbow, rainbow
And I let the fish go
The brown enormous odor he lived by was
too close Glass smooth dung
The pig’s eyes followed him, a cheerful
stareEven to the sow that had always ate her
young

Self-wroth
AddicMon
He hid the pints behind a two-by-four
And then he thought he almost might
endure his exile yet another year or more
Safe and companionable as in the ark
The lantern like the sun going away
He felt the bats’ uncertain staggering flight
But it took him a long time finally to make
his mind up to go home
The crowded streams
Family/ idea of home
For if those streaks, those mile-long, shiny, Travel
tearstains aren’t waterfalls yet Should we
have stayed at home and thought of here?
Oh must we dream our dreams and have
them too?
But surely it would have been a pity not to

have seen the trees along this road A
sudden golden silence in which the
traveller takes a notebook writes:
Is it lack of imagination that makes us
come
To imagined places, not just stay at home
And here or there... no should we have
stayed home wherever that may be
The old grandmother sits in the kitchen
with the child
Were both foretold by the almanac but
only known to the grandmother
The clever almanac
And her teacup full of dark brown tears
With crayons the child always draws a
rigid house
Puts in a man with buttons like tears
The little moons fall down like tears from
between the pages of the almanac Time to
plant tears says the almanac
And the child draws another inscrutable
house
In the cold, cold parlour
Since uncle Arthur fired a bullet into him
he hadn’t said a word Come and say
goodbye to your little cousin Arthur
I was lifted up and given one lily of the
valley
A little frosted cake
Jack frost had started to paint him
And left him white forever
The smallest page at court
His eyes shut up so tight
Oh but it is dirty
That cuts him under the arms
Impregnated wickerwork
A dirty dog quite comfy

Poem
Hope Is the Thing
with Feathers
There’s a certain
slant of light
Quotes
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words And
never stops at all
In the gale
Be the storm
That kept so many warm
Chillest land
Strangest sea
It asked a crumb of me
There’s a certain slant of light
Cathedral tunes
But internal difference
Sent us of the air

Mental Illness
Death
Despair
On the look of death
I felt a funeral in my
brain
I felt a funeral in my brain
Kept treading treading till it seemed Kept
beating beating till I thought My mind was
going numb
And creak across my soul
As all the heavens were a bell
And I dropped down and down
Mental Illness- madness,
uncertainty
Death
I heard a fly buzz
when I died
I heard a fly buzz when I died The stillness
in the room
Was like the stillness in the air Had wrung
them dry

The soul has bandaged moments
She feels some ghastly fright come up And

Poetry quotes and themes 2023
Long dungeoned from his rose
With shackles on the plumed feet And
staples in the song
These are not brayed of tongue
I could bring you
jewels had I mind to
I could bring you jewels had I mind to But
you have enough of those Berries of the
Bahamas have I
But this little blaze
Flickering to itself in the meadow Suits me
more than those
Never a fellow matched this topaz And his
emerald swing
I taste a liquor never I taste a liquor never brewed Not all the
brewed
vats upon the rhine Yield such a alcohol
Inebriate of air am I
I taste a liquor never brewed
And debauchee of dew
When butterflies-renounce this drams I
shall but drink the more
Till seraphs wing their snowy hats And
saints to windows run

Simple things
Happiness
Rebelliousness
Drunken intoxicaMon and
indulgence
As a women she had to be
restrained and adhere to
social rules. Everything this
poem isn’t doing.
