CASE STUDY
Manorama is a non-profit organization headquartered at New Delhi
with INR 20 Lakhs annual budget. Their mission is to help 14–20-yearold teenagers who are:
1. Currently in School and at a high risk of dropping out
2. Currently dropped out of school
3. Never went to school
This could be due to various reasons like poverty, gender/communal
discrimination, lack of facilities, safety issues, etc.
The aim of Manorama is three-fold:
1. To keep at-risk students in school or help at-risk students transition
from school into employment
2. To help dropouts re-enter school or find permanent employment
3. To help students who never went to school either to enter a school
or help them with employment
In order to solve this three-fold goal of theirs, Manorama has curated
a program “Saksham” aimed at successfully implementing these goals.
This program is currently being experimented in 3 towns of Uttar
Pradesh: Rampur, Bisauli, and Mundia. These towns are described as
“Madhyam” towns as per their program which satisfies the following
basic criteria: the town must have an average of 4 to 5 primary
schools each, at least 2 secondary schools, and a youth population of
more than 10000. All three towns fulfill these criteria.
The majority of families in these towns have an annual income of
less than INR 2 Lakhs/month. Some of the primary jobs in these
towns involve agriculture, dairy, poultry, retail & wholesale
businesses, service-based jobs, manufacturing plant jobs, etc.
Manorama has a tie-up with some of the schools in these towns
as well as some staffing agencies. The revenue source for
Manorama completely relies on Government Grants, Staffing
Commissions, Donations, and Corporate tie-ups.
Currently, Manorama serves 2000 youths per year across these
three towns. Manorama is looking to triple the number of
teenagers it serves per year. Moreover, they want to extend their
program to other states as well. Manorama being an NGO does
not want to focus on increasing profits but wants to generate
enough revenue to support its expansion strategies.
CASE QUESTIONS
1. Help Manorama design an efficient-sustainable growth model
and expansion strategy for the next 5 years. Justify when can
the goal of tripling the number of youths be achieved. You
may specify which states you seek to target first. Elaborate on
their budget allocation.
2. Suggest alternative sources of revenue for Manorama. What
kind of tie-ups/collaborations can be beneficial for them?
3. Final recommendation on whether Manorama should go for
the expansion or not. If not, what is your recommendation for
their growth?
