2016 District Welding Fab Contest SkiMJS\ O K L A H O M A The 2016 Oklahoma SkillsUSA District Welding Contest will test the ability for students to take a company blueprint and create a complete product. The blueprint provided will indicate metric dimensions. Students will be required to convert the measurements to US standard or utilize metric measuring devices. Also, the customer is requesting a change order on one feature of the provided blueprint. Students should use the blueprint provided and the following pages to identify the bill of materials, welding process to be used, tools allowed in the contest, and any change orders requested by the customer. - 600 23.625" mm - 15"mm 380 Typ SMA1 1 /8 5.9" 17.75" Typ GMA 4PI. r • Typ GMAW i 140 mm 1 5.5" , 1 11.8125" 300 mm r- 15.75" 1 of 3 v Typ GMAW SkiMJS\ O K L A H O M A 2016 District Welding Fab Contest Bill of Materials: #2 – 12”X 48”X 3/16” Tread Plate #1 – 1”X 1”X 72” 14 gauge Square Tubing #1 – 1”X 1”X 63” 14 gauge Square Tubing #1 – 3/4”X 3/4”X 72” 14 gauge Square Tubing Components: QTY A 4 B 4 C 4 D 4 E 1 SIZE 19.685 X 15" 1" X 1" X 17.75" 1" X 1" X 11.8125" 3/4" X 3/4" X15.75 6.375" X 6.375" ITEM Bowl Sides – Tread Plate Bowl Cradle Top – (14ga) Square Tubing Legs – (14ga) Square Tubing Horizontal Supports – (14ga) Square Tubing Mesh Grate See Change Order Tools Allowed: Oxy-Fuel Cutting Torch Hand Grinder Clamps Metal Marking Pen or Soap Stone Measuring Tape PPE Compass Straight Edge (For Marking) Square Mobile Phone, Tablet, or Metric/US Standard Conversion Chart for converting or calculating metric to US standard conversions Processes: Welding: Fabricators will use the welding symbols to identify the welding process for welding. All SMAW welding will be with 7018 1/8”. Cutting: All metal cutting will be performed with hand held oxy-fuel cutting torches. The straight edge can only be used in the marking of the material. NO edge guides will be used in the cutting of materials. A score of zero will be assigned to the OFG portion of the scoring rubric if a guide is used. 2 of 3 SkiMJS\ O K L A H O M A 2016 District Welding Fab Contest Grinding: Grinding will only be allowed to clean oxy-fuel slag. Judges will deduct points for excessive grinding if they feel the grinding played a major role in the fit-up. Change Order: The customer likes the look and design of the fire pit. But, the customer plans to use the fire pit on an outdoor patio that is textured, stained, and sealed concrete. She does not want the ashes and hot coals falling through the mesh grate in the original design onto her patio. The sales department conferred with the design engineers and determined the fire pit would work with the bottom sealed with a square made of the 3/16” tread plate. The engineers also recommended that some form of removable grate or slotted plate be added to suspend the wood between 1” – 2”off of the bottom of the fire pit. This suspending plate would allow more combustion air to reach the bottom of the wood in the unit and promote a superior clean burning fuel. The result will be more fire and less smoke. The fabricator is asked to fabricate the 3/16” square tread plate to seal the bottom of the fire pit and a perforated or slotted plate from the drops created from the original bill of materials. It should meet the provided parameters from the engineers, but can be of the fabricator’s design. The welding process for the bottom seal plate will be SMAW – 7018 - 1/8, inside weld, and weld all around. The judges will score the fabricator’s design. JUDGING NOTES: • • • 3 of 3 Judging the innovation and creativity is a subjective score. If the judges are uncomfortable with the subjectivity, then they should judge the team’s Change Order Product by comparing the product to the engineering parameters (ie. 1-2” off the bottom, slotted, removable…) The option also exists for giving each team 50 points on the rubric and eliminate judging that criteria of the rubric. The Oxy-fuel score can be derived from judging the drops if the judges want un-welded cuts to score In most contests, adaptations must be made. As long as everyone is informed of the criteria or change and all contestant’s products/processes/behaviors are judged equally, the contests will produce the correct winners
