Sports Terminologies And Their Meanings
Yorker
A yorker is a ball pitched on or inside the popping crease. A
full pitch is a ball that the batsmen can reach before it hits the
ground. A long hop is a ball short of good length.
Crease
The bowling crease, which is the back edge of the crease
marking, is the line that marks the end of the pitch, as in
Law 6.1 (Area of pitch). It shall be 8 ft 8 in/2.64 m in length.
Pavilion
A cricket pavilion is a pavilion at a cricket ground. It is the
main building within which the players usually change in
dressing rooms and which is the main location for watching the
cricket match for members and others
LBW
LBW rules. Simply put, a batsman is considered out LBW if
they obstruct a ball that was en route to hitting the stumps
with any part of their body barring their hands. In cricket,
hands, up to the wrists, are considered as an extension of the
bat.
Stump
In cricket, the stumps are the three vertical posts that support
the bails and form the wicket. Stumping or being stumped is a
method of dismissing a batsman.
Bails
In the sport of cricket, a bail is one of the two smaller sticks
placed on top of the three stumps to form a wicket. The bails
are used to determine when the wicket is broken or put down,
which in turn is one of the critical factors in determining
whether a batsman is out bowled, stumped, run out or hit
wicket.
Silly
point (plural silly points) (cricket) A fielding position, on the
offside, square of the batsman's wicket, and very near the
batsman; a fielder in this position.
Maiden Over
When a bowler bowls a full over without allowing the batsman
to score a run.
Edge
When a batter only just makes contact with the ball with the
side of his bat and is caught by the wicketkeeper or the slips.

Bully
Used to restart play when possession is unclear when play
was stopped (e.g. injury timeout). Two opposing players start
with their sticks on the ground, the ball is placed between
them, and they must tap sticks above the ball before they can
play the ball.
Short Corner
During a penalty corner, also called a short corner, not more
than five players, including the goalkeeper, can defend the
goal. Once the attacking player pushes the ball to the edge of
the striking circle, the defenders are allowed to leave the
goalline and charge down in a bid to thwart a goal. Olympics.
Penalty Stroke
A penalty stroke is awarded when the defense either
commits a deliberate foul inside their opponent attacking
25 or intentionally fouls inside the shooting circle, which
prevents a goal from being scored.
Pushin
A push pass is used to move the ball speedily over shorter
distances. Because it gives you the most control over the ball,
it is the best pass to use in short distances and it gives you
more accuracy. Your stick will stay in contact with the ball until
it is released for the pass.
Scoop
The scoop is an aerial pass on the dribble from the left side of
the field. It is used to lift the ball over an opposing player so
you can center the ball or as a lifted shot on the goal.

Kick
Kicking is the act of propelling a ball by striking it with the foot
or, depending upon the sport, the shin. Kicking is most
common in Association Football, where only the two
goalkeepers are allowed to use their hands.
Goal
A goal is scored when the whole of the ball passes over the
goal line, between the goalposts, and under the crossbar,
provided that no offense has been committed by the team
scoring the goal.
Head
A header is a technique that is used in association football to
control the ball using the head to pass, shoot, or clear. This
can be done from a standing, jumping, or diving position. The
heading is a common technique and is used by players in
practically every match.
Penalty Kick
A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits a direct free
kick offense inside their penalty area or off the field as
part of the play as outlined in Laws 12 and 13. A goal may
be scored directly from a penalty kick.
Dribble
Dribbling. Simply put, this phrase means staying on the ball
while moving it around the pitch. Players can use different
techniques to achieve this, like hiding and revealing. Dribbling
is an important skill to develop.

Service
A serve (or, more formally, a service) in tennis is a shot to start
a point. A player will hit the ball with a racquet so it will fall into
the diagonally opposite service box without being stopped by
the net.
Grandslam
In tennis, the term Grand Slam refers to the accomplishment of
winning all four major championships-the championships of
Australia, France, Britain (Wimbledon), and the United States
in the same calendar season.
Deuce
The only time this is different is when both you and your
opponent have won three points each and the score is 40-40.
This is called a deuce
Breakpoint
A breakpoint occurs when two conditions are met: 1) one
player is one point away from a win, and 2) their opponent
is serving. Essentially, in order to win the game — and inch
closer to winning the set and match — the player must "break"
their opponent's serve.
Smash
A smash in tennis is a shot that is hit above the hitter's head
with a serve-like motion. It is also referred to as an overhead.
A smash can usually be hit with a high amount of force and is
often a shot that ends the point.
