Chapter 2 Lesson 1 Objectives At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: 1 Explain what performance assessment is; 2 Identify the types of performance task 3 Differentiate the process and product based assessment Chapter 2 Lesson 1 Why and what of performance assessment The terms performance assessment and performancebased assessment (PBA) are used interchangeably throughout much of assessment literature. Oberg (201 0) describes performance-based assessment generally as “one or more approaches for measuring student progress, skills, and achievement” and that performance assessments are “the ultimate form of linking instruction with assessment” Do you consider written assessments as perfomancebased? YES NO Written assessments can be considered performancebased when their purpose is to measure skill or ability and when they are subjectively scored. YES Performance Assessment 1 is one that measures how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems. (Ferman, 2005) is an alternative form of assessment that moves away from traditional paper and pen tests solving and conducting experiments and investigations Role Playing constructing and implementing seminar plans Writing a research report Performance Assessment demonstrations, Creating video presentation Speech skit Lin, 1 995 stated that performance assessments provide a basis of teachers to evaluate both the effectiveness of the process or procedure used and the product resulting from a performance task. PURPOSE OF PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT Performance Assessment Series, Middle School Edition, 2001 A. The main purpose of performance assessment is not to render an evaluation, but to improve student learning 3 Performance Assessment Series, Middle School Edition, 2001 B. Performance assessment can be used as either a formative or summative tool TYPES OF PERFORMANCE TASKS: PERFORMANCE TASKS any learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency. LEARNING BY DOING PROCESS-BASED OR PROCESS-ORIENTED PERFORMANCE-BASED TASK concerned with the actual task performance rather than the output or product of the activity. Process oriented performance based assessment evaluates the actual task performance. It does not emphasize on the output or product of the activity. This assessment aims to know what processes a person undergoes when given a task. PRODUCTS-BASED OR PRODUCT-ORIENTED PERFORMANCE-BASED TASK requires actual student performance through a product or outputs such as completed project or work that demonstrates levels of task accomplishment.
