Office Skills
Read and understand the three articles and complete the CER table below to show their understanding in the lesson.
Article 1
Title: The Role of Front Office Department.
Reference: Front Office Operations in Hotel and Hospitality Management | by Lords Institute Of
Management | Medium
Front Office Department plays a vital role in a hotel, and it is the face of a hotel or hospitality
establishment. It is the first and the last department where a guest interacts. The Front Office Department is
responsible for creating firsthand impressions regarding the level of services and facilities provided. The Front
desk is responsible for answering enquiries, directing queries to correct personnel/department.
Communication skills and personal appearance are very important and influencing factors. A person
should be confident, warm, polite, patient, and sincere to deal with the queries of guests at the Front Office.
Front Office and other departments work towards a common goal that is customer service and delight.
To give the guest the most hospitable services where they feel relax and comfortable. Maintaining guest
relations is an important aspect. The sections are connected, and all officials should work together to ensure
smooth functioning of the department with ultimate goal of delighting the guests. The industry is looking for
professionals with good communication and interpersonal skills who can build a rapport with the guests.
Article 2
Title: Front Desk Skills
Reference: https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/resumes-cover-letters/front-desk-resume-skills
Being able to perform clerical tasks while maintaining a personable nature is important for any professional in a
front desk position. Employers look for front desk skills on candidate resumes to help them decide whether a candidate
has the right qualifications to support the daily operations of their business.
Front desk skills are skill sets used by individuals in an office or customer service setting. They imply an
individual's hard and soft skills relating to communication, technology use or time management. Receptionists, office
assistants, hotel desk assistants, or customer service associates are all examples of professionals who use front desk
skills to complete their job efficiently. Having several front desk skills on your resume allows you to present yourself
as a worthy job candidate to an employer.
Front desk skills encompass a wide variety of technical and interpersonal skills. Interpersonal communication: as
a front desk professional, you interact with a variety of people each day, including upper management personnel,
coworkers, customers or business clients. Written communication: When you work in a front desk position, you need
to be able to write emails, memos and other business documents with proper grammar and spelling, tone and
language. Active listening; Active listening is the process by which an individual uses non-verbal communication
signals like nods, smiles and eye contact or small verbal gestures to convey their attention to the person speaking.
Foreign languages; Front desk professionals working in the hospitality industry, or as part of a global corporation may
encounter individuals who have different native languages. Attention to detail; Attention to detail is an essential soft
skill for front desk professionals as they perform various tasks that require precision. Scheduling, Scheduling is a
technical skill that front desk professionals use to create, update and maintain digital planners or schedules for company
operations.

Title: Employee Safety Programs - Hotel Front Office Management
Reference: https://www.wisdomjobs.com/e-university/hotel-front-office-management-tutorial369/employee-safety-programs-13188.html
The hospitality industry is rife with opportunities for employee accidents. Behind the scenes are many
people crowded into small work areas, busy preparing food and beverages and performing other services for
the guests. The employees who are most in danger include those whose equipment is in need of repair or who
work in areas that are too small or who depend on other employees who are not attentive to the job at hand.
The front of the house also provides opportunities for accidents. Employees and guests must use public areas
that may be overcrowded or worn from continual use. The following information on hotel law provides insight
into an innkeeper’s responsibility: The innkeeper must periodically inspect the facility to discover hidden or
latent defects and then to remove or repair those defects. During the time prior to repair the innkeeper has a
duty to warn the guests about the existence and location of the dangers. How does hotel management begin to
develop guidelines for employee safety? Employee Safety Committee The best way to begin is to establish
a safety committee, a group of frontline employees and supervisors who discuss safety issues concerning guests
and employees. Frontline employees know the details of day - to - day hazards. They deal with the faulty
equipment, traverse the crowded banquet rooms, work next to one another in a poorly laid - out kitchen, process

11
soiled laundry, push carts through busy public corridors, and hear guest complaints during checkout. Moreover,
these people make up part of the group that employee safety procedures are supposed to protect.
Why not give them an opportunity to make their environment better? Although some employees do not
want this responsibility, other employees will welcome this opportunity. With positive results, there may be a
few more volunteers the next time. Management is a necessary part of the committee, not only because it is
used to carrying out long - range plans but because it supplies the clout and support needed to implement the
procedures.

Drafting, like drawing, is a form of visual language that uses lines, pictorial images, and symbols to
convey specific meaning. Drawing is used as a technique for developing and communicating ideas. It is thus
a mean of communication used by designers to effectively convey their ideas and talk with one another on
how to turn these drawings into reality.
In this unit, student will be acquainted with the common drafting tools and equipment, learn the
basics in drawing such as perspective, isometric, and orthographic projections, perform basic mensuration
and calculations, and know how to practice health and safety practices when working on your drawing
boards.

ACTIVITY 10:
Industrial Art
Read and understand the three articles and complete the CER table to show their understanding in the lesson.
Article 1
Title: Carpentry
Reference: https://www.britannica.com/technology/carpentry
Carpentry, the art and trade of cutting, working, and joining timber. The term includes both structural
timberwork in framing and items such as doors, windows, and staircases.
In the past, when buildings were often wholly constructed of timber framing, the carpenter played a
considerable part in building construction; along with the mason he was the principal building worker. The
scope of the carpenter’s work has altered, however, with the passage of time. Increasing use of concrete and
steel construction, especially for floors and roofs, means that the carpenter plays a smaller part in making the
framework of buildings, except for houses and small structures. On the other hand, in the construction of
temporary formwork and shuttering for concrete building, the carpenter’s work has greatly increased.
Because wood is widely distributed throughout the world, it has been used as a building material for
centuries; many of the tools and techniques of carpentry, perfected after the Middle Ages, have changed little
since that time. On the other hand, world supplies of wood are shrinking, and the increasing cost of obtaining,
finishing, and distributing timber has brought continuing revision in traditional practices. Further, because
much traditional construction wastes wood, engineering calculation has supplanted empirical and rule-ofthumb methods. The development of laminated timbers such as plywood, and the practice
of prefabrication have simplified and lowered the cost of carpentry.
Article 2
Title: Drawing
Reference:https://courses.lumenlearning.com/atd-sac-artappreciation/chapter/oer-1-21/
Drawing is the simplest and most efficient way to communicate visual ideas, and for centuries charcoal,
chalk, graphite and paper have been adequate enough tools to launch some of the most profound images in
art. Leonardo da Vinci’s The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist wraps all four
figures together in what is essentially an extended family portrait. Da Vinci draws the figures in a
spectacularly realistic style, one that emphasizes individual identities and surrounds the figures in a grand,
unfinished landscape. He animates the scene with the Christ child pulling himself forward, trying to release
himself from Mary’s grasp to get closer to a young John the Baptist on the right, who himself is turning
toward the Christ child with a look of curious interest in his younger cousin.
The traditional role of drawing was to make sketches for larger compositions to be manifest as
paintings, sculpture or even architecture. Because of its relative immediacy, this function for drawing
continues today. A preliminary sketch by the contemporary architect Frank Gehry captures the complex
organic forms of the buildings he designs. Drawing is also used to readily document what an artist sees,
remembers, or imagines. And drawing, of course, is often used to create finished works of art in their own
right.
Article 3
Title: Lines
Reference: http://visualartspdsf.blogspot.com/2012/01/elements-of-art-line.html
Line is one of the most important elements of art. Imagine creating a painting, sculpture or design without
drawing lines to divide the paper or canvas into shapes and forms. Think about how important a role line
plays in the creation process. Lines can communicate an idea or express a feeling. They can appear static or
active. Lines define objects. We will look at how artists use line expressively.
Line
•
is the path of a moving point: horizontal, vertical, and diagonal.
•
is the mark left by a tool: brush, pencil, pen, etc.
•
defines the position and direction of a design, image, or form.
•
Types of line include vertical, horizontal, diagonal, contour, or a combination of these.
•
They may be curved, straight, thick, thin, smooth, long, short, and so forth.
•
Lines are used to create shape, pattern, texture, space, movement, and optical illusion in
design.
•
The use of lines allows artist to demonstrate delicacy or force.
•
Curves may take us slowly uphill or turn sharply twisting our mind as they turn.
•
a line can express various moods and feelings.
