REMEMBER what the Deputy Story Teller said about poetry:
“It’s the thing that you’re doing and the way that you do it.”
Or
What did the poet say? How did they say it? And how effective was it?
Poetic Form
Poems sometimes have rules. When we study a poem, we can sometimes see that the poem follows these rules.
Some of the keys elements of these rules include
a) Line
b) Stanza
c) Rhythm
d) Rhyme

From Above
What do I care if the trees are bare
And the hills are dark
And the skies are grey.
What do I care for chill in the air
For crows that cark
At the rough wind's way.
What do I care for the dead leaves there-Or the sullen road
By the sullen wood.
There's heart in my heart
To bear my load!
So enough, the day is good!
Answer the following questions on the poem, “From Above”.
1.
How many stanzas does this poem have?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
2.
How many lines are in each stanza?
3
___________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
3.
Do any of the lines rhyme? If so what is its rhyming scheme?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
4.
Do the sentences always end at the end of a line?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Rhyme and Rhyming Schemes
Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the ends, such as cat / hat, or jumping / bumping.
When a poem has rhyming words at the ends of its lines, these are called “end rhymes.”
Here is an example of end rhyme:
My cat is nice.
My cat likes mice.
A “rhyme scheme” is a way of describing the pattern of end rhymes in a poem. Each new sound at the end of a
line is given a letter, starting with “A,” then “B,” and so on. If an end sound repeats the end sound of an earlier
line, it gets the same letter as the earlier line.
Here are three slightly different cat poems, each with a different rhyme scheme. The first is AABB, the second is
ABAB, and the third is ABCB):
My cat is nice.
My cat likes mice.
My cat is fat.
I like my cat.

My cat is nice.
My cat is fat.

I like my cat.

the poem.

SIMILES AND METAPHORS
A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things. The simile is usually in a phrase
that begins with "as" or "like."
·
·
·
The dog was as big as a horse.
The night was as black as coal.
The knife was as sharp as a razor.
This is different from a metaphor, which is a comparison that says something is something else.
·
·
·
The horse of a dog jumped at me.
I walked out of the house into the coal black night.
The knife that Mum gave me was razor sharp.

Metaphor
A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two things that aren't alike
but do have something in common. Unlike a simile, where two things are compared directly using like or as,
a metaphor's comparison is more indirect by stating something is something else.

It is a rap that explains figurative language, (Language that paints pictures)
Here is the first part of the text of the rap.
Meet Will, a youngin' with an old soul,
An emcee who wants to be the next to blow.
Imagine: he's in a dark room in Manhattan,
Scrapping, scribbling on napkins,
Trying to make a living off rapping,
But skills, he lacked them. Nobody thought that it
would happen,
Until one day, Will switches his style,
Gets deep, and his wordplay gets witty and wild.
He used to sound so embarrassing,
Now peep all the metaphors and comparisons.
His life is a highway, but he'd confess,
He has a plan but needs a GPS.
He's using references and allusions,
A lyrical Houdini, creating illusions.
Dolphins in '72 - he won't lose,
Up by the first alarm, he's not snoozing.
You'll be amazed by every phrase,
He will come correct with the wordplay.
Literal lines that block his way,
He will come correct with the wordplay. (x2)

Enrichment tasks for those who have finished
‘I’m a freak show’ is an allusion to old fashioned Freak shows found in circuses. These were exhibitions
of live human curiosities that appeared in travelling fairs, circuses and taverns in England since the
1600s. These included so-called giants, dwarves, fat people, the very thin, conjoined twins (twins born
joined together) and even people from faraway places. Freak shows were a particularly popular form
of entertainment during the Victorian period (1860s to 1900) when people from all classes flocked to
stare and laugh at these unusual examples of human life.
Below are links to real posters that were shown to advertise these shows.

Identify an ALLUSION in a poem and EXPLAIN its EFFECT on the audience
Identify a METAPHOR in a poem and EXPLAIN its EFFECT on the audience
Identify the EMOTION being APPEALED to and the EFFECT on the reader
Identify and describe IMAGERY
EXPLAIN the impact the use of IMAGERY has on the audience
WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW:
Allusion
An allusion is when a person or author makes an indirect reference in speech, text, or song to an
event or figure. Often the allusions made are to past events or figures, but sometimes allusions are made to
current famous people or events.
e.g.
Your backyard is a Garden of Eden. (Biblical allusion)
Don't be a Scrooge! (reference to A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens)
Metaphor
A metaphor is a way of saying something that is used to make a comparison between two things
that aren't alike but do have something in common. A metaphor's comparison states something is something
else:
e.g. The snow is a white blanket.
The hospital was a refrigerator.
The classroom was a zoo.
Laughter is the music of the soul.
The stars are sparkling diamonds.
Emotion
A strong feeling coming from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others
e.g.
love
jealousy
joy
frustration
hate
anger
despair
New Information:
Imagery
Visually descriptive or symbolic language, especially in a literary work:
e.g.
He fumed and charged like an angry bull.
The eerie silence was shattered by her scream.
She could hear the footsteps of doom nearing.

societies were complicated and industrial. The ‘Noble Savage’ was seen to be innocent, free and not
corrupted by modern life.

To be able to identify an allusion in a poem and explain its effect on the audience.
To be able to identify the emotion being appealed to and the effect on the reader.
To be able to identify similarities and differences between the uses of repetition
across different poems.

___________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
New Information
Repetition
The use of repetition in a poem is when something which has already been said or written is
repeated a number of times. This draws attention to the item and emphasises its importance. Often the
27
repetitions made in poems are of particular phrases (a small group of words which present an idea) or images (to
make them stand out more)
e.g.
Because I’m happy ( https://youtu.be/ZbZSe6N_BXs )
Pharrell Williams - Happy
You are better now ( https://youtu.be/-yHoa4MR0W4 )
Post Malone – Better Now

WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW:
Repetition
The use of repetition in a poem is when something which has already been said or written is
repeated a number of times. This draws attention to the item and emphasises its importance. Often the
repetitions made in poems are of particular phrases (a small group of words which present an idea) or images (to
make them stand out more)
Emotion

e.g.
Imagery
love
jealousy
joy
frustration
hate
anger
despair
Visually descriptive or symbolic language, especially in a literary work:
e.g.
He fumed and charged like an angry bull.
The eerie silence was shattered by her scream.
She could hear the footsteps of doom nearing.

and contrasts the two elements and can show irony, humour or sadness.
e.g.
beauty and ugliness
good and bad
hot and cold

redeem his life by shooting an apple off the head of his son Walter in a single attempt. Tell split the apple with a
bolt from his crossbow. Gessler then noticed that Tell had removed two crossbow bolts from his quiver, so he
asked why. Tell was reluctant to answer, but Gessler promised that he would not kill him; he replied that, had he
