RESPIRATION • RESPIRATION: The process in which nutrient molecules are broken down into simpler substances with or without the help of oxygen and it results in the release of energy. It involves the action of enzymes in cells. WE NEED ENERGY FOR: • Eg: a) cell division and growth b) synthesis of protiens, fats, vitamins, etc c) active transport d) conduction of nerve impulses and muscular movement e) maintenance of constant body temperature ATP ( ADENOSINE TRI PHOSPHATE) • It is an energy rich molecule. • It is synthesized in mitochondria. • Energy stored in ATPs which is used by the cells . TYPES OF RESPIRATION • AEROBIC RESPIRATION It is the breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen with the release of energy. In this process, the glucose is completely oxidized to carbon dioxide and water which are released as waste products. WORD EQUATION: Glucose + Oxygen _________ Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy CHEMICAL EQUATION : C6H12O6 + 6O2 _____________CO2 + H2O + Energy (2830kJ) ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION • The respiration which takes place in the absence of oxygen called Anaerobic Respiration. The end products of anaerobic respiration in bacteria and fungi are ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide, whereas in animals lactic acid is produced. In bacteria and fungi FERMENTATION C6H12O6 ______________ 2C2H5OH + 2CO2 + Energy(118KJ) Glucose Ethanol Carbon dioxide In Animals C6H12O6 Glucose _______________ 2C3H6O3 + Energy Lactic acid AEROBIC Oxygen Energy Used High energy yield ANAEROBIC Not Used Low energy yield Waste Carbon dioxide and Water Ethanol, lactic acid and products Carbon dioxide Occurs in Mitochondria Cytoplasm Organism All advanced organism yeast, bacteria, fungi and higher organisms when O2 in short supply/ vigorous exercise in higher animals OXYGEN DEBT The amount of oxygen needed to remove the lactic acid from the muscles and blood is known as Oxygen Debt. OXYGEN DEFICIT VS OXYGEN DEBT Alcohol Fermentation : Anaerobic respiration of bacteria and fungi is known as “Alcoholic fermentation”.
