English 12 Syllabus Life Planning Unit Plan PART1: College essay Admissions ● Students will create memoirs of experiences they have gone through that may have changed the way they think or shaped the way they live. ○ Students will write 6 word novels of each memoir shared. ● Students will review, annotate, and discuss well written sample essays of peers for direction and inspiration. As well as dissecting different college essay prompts for different schools. ● Students will create an introduction and thesis statement to the start of their own essay. ● Students will continue to draft, write, brainstorm, and input ideas into their essays. ● Students will continue to write their essays. PART 2: Continuing College Admissions ● Students will go back over sample essays for comparisons. After reviewing samples students will revise their own work until complete. ● Students will use the internet to review colleges of their choice. Students choose college and begin to fill out applications for said college. ● Students will review fafsa applications and begin to fill out applications to complete the entire application process. ● Students will complete applications and add their personal essays to finish the process. ● Students will use the internet and other resources for scholarship opportunities then begin to fill out scholarship applications to gain extra financial help for college. PART 3: Resume Building ● Students will complete a skills test worksheet to fully understand what they are good at or can be good at. Students will then create the format of their resume. ● Students will make a list of past experiences to use when completing a resume. Students will then complete the formatting of the resume and add all additional information that is needed. ● Students will review well done cover letters, annotate, and discuss what a cover letter needs. Students will take notes on what a cover letter consists of. ● Students will begin and create their own cover letter. ● Students review well done cover letters again as they revise their own cover letters. Cover letters should be entirely complete on this day and students will then put the entire resume together and have their own resume at their disposal to add to or subtract from. PART 4: Job interviewing Process ● Students will research and come up with job interview questions and create their own responses to the questions. Questions should be 2 days worth. We will go over body language and eye contact as students take notes. ● Students will watch snippets of interviews to analyze the good and bad. Students will create “the perfect interview” and discuss as well as annotate why this is the perfect interview. ● Students will interview each other and try to imitate the interview process as much as possible. Students will create their own feedback and present information through documents. ● Students will come back for a 2nd interview with hopes of improvements made from the previous interview. ● Assessment- Students will begin to construct an essay on why they should be hired for the job of their dreams.
