What is the Sunrise Movement?
The Sunrise Movement is a youth-led environmental organization whose goals are to stop
climate change, create millions of jobs, mobilize and educate youth about the climate crisis,
pressure politicians to act on the climate crisis, advocate for the "Green New Deal" and
intersectionality, transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030 and simultaneously address
economic, social and racial injustices. This movement is national and is increasing. The greatest
presence is registered in the country's East, but in the West, there is a large presence in several
states. Each HUB is autonomous and free, but when there are several HUBs located in the same
region, networks of solidarity and collaboration are created.
What aspects of their self-definition seemed interesting to you and why?
The first thing that seems most interesting to me is that young people lead this movement. On the
website, a large number and presence of young people are shown through photographs. This tells
us about a change in mentality; it tells us about a clearer awareness in youth about the need to
live differently, to use different means to live and survive, such as using other sources of energy,
not just fossil energy. This movement does something fundamental today, educate young people
about the climate crisis.
Also, when you mention "simultaneously addressing economic, social, and racial injustices, " I
think of the power structures interested in keeping everything the same. This leads us to
structural violence, where the most vulnerable are always unprotected.
What is the 'Permian Basin Climate Bomb'?
It is the largest oil and gas shale in the United States and the world, is located in Texas and New
Mexico, and is expected to account for most of North American oil and gas production. It is a
massive source of methane. It has the highest emissions ever measured from a major oil industry
in the United States. That is why it is called a climate bomb. The repercussions in the short and
long term are alarming for the environment and for humans.
Is this a good focus for the Sunrise Movement? Why or why not?
It's a good approach. As the information in the presentation tells us, El Paso is the 10th sunniest
city in the world, and only 3% of energy is solar. The biggest energy source we use, here in El
Paso, is fracked gas from the Permian Basin of the Perm Basin. The city of El Paso is supplied
with gas by the pipeline that connects to the El Paso Electric Co.
Proposals like this movement make citizens more aware of where the energy we use comes from
and its impact on the environment, which is why this movement has a good approach.

El movimiento amanecer es una organizacion ambientalista que esta dirigida por jovenes, cuyos objetivos
son detener el cambio climatico, crear millones de empleos, movilizar y educar a los jovenes sobre la
crisis climatica, Presionar a los Politicos para que actuen sobre la crisis climatica, abogar por el "Green
New Deal" y la interseccionalidad, Transicion hacia el 100% de energia renovable para 2030 y abordar
simultaneamente las injusticias economicas, sociales y raciales. Este movimiento es nacional y va en
aumento en donde se registra mas presencia es en el Este del pais, pero en el oeste tambien cuenta con
una gran presencia por varios estados. cada HUB es autonomo y libre, pero cuando existen varios HUBs
ubicados en una misma region se crean redes de solidaridad y colaboracion.
¿Qué aspectos de su autodefinición te parecieron interesantes y por qué?
Lo primero que me parece mas interesante es que este movimiento este dirigido por jovenes. En la pagina
web se muestra por medio de fotografias una gran cantidad y presencia de jovenes; esto nos habla del
cambio de mentalidad, nos habla de una consciencia mas clara en la juventud sobre la necesidad de vivir
de una manera diferente, de utilizar medios distintos para vivir y sobrevivir como la utilizacion de otras
fuentes de enegia y no solo de la energia fosil. Me parece que este movimiento hace algo fundamental en
la actualidad, educar a los jovenes sobre la crisis climatica.
Tambien cuando menciona "abordar simultaneamente las injusticias economicas, sociales y raciales" me
hace pensar en las estructuras de poder que les interesa que todo siga igual. esto nos lleva a la violencia
estructural en donde los mas vulnerables siempre quedan desprotegidos.
-- ¿Qué es la 'Bomba Climática de la Cuenca Pérmica'? [34-35]
Es el mayor esquisto de petroleo y de gas en los estados unidos y el mundo, se encuentra en Texas y
Nuevo Mexico y se prevee que registre la mayor parte de produccion de petroleo y de gas de america del
norte. es una fuente masiva de metano. tiene las emisiones mas altas jamas medidas de una importante
industria petrolera en Estados Unidos. Por eso es llamada una bomba climatica. las repercusiones a corto
y largo plazo son alarmantes para el medio ambiente y para el ser humano.
¿Es este un buen enfoque para el Movimiento Sunrise? ¿Por qué o por qué no?
Es un buen enfoque. Como nos plantea la información de la presentación, el Paso es la décima ciudad más
soleada del mundo y solo el 3 % es energía solar, la mayor fuente de energía que utilizamos, aquí en El
Paso, es el gas fracked gas from the Permian Basin de la cuenca del permico. La ciudad de El paso se
abastece de gas por el oleoducto que se conecta con El Paso Electric Co.
Las propuestas como este movimiento hacen a la ciudadanía mas consciente de donde viene la energía
que utilizamos y el impacto que tiene en el medio ambiente, por eso este movimiento tiene un buen
enfoque.
