We are using our reading about the atomic bombings in World War Two to help us learn
some of the fundamental skills in researching for a writing a research paper. So far we
have read a number of different kinds of texts with very different perspectives on the
US's bombings of Japan. We then practiced close summary and analysis of a single
text when completing our Close Reading Paper. Now we will practice another essential
skill: The Annotated Bibliography.
Annotated Bibliographies allow researchers to capture a lot of essential information
about the sources they are using in their research papers, including bibliographical
information, summaries, and short analyses. Even if you have written one before,
please take a few minutes to review the resources on Annotated Bibs on The Perdue

Goals and Outcomes
Annotated bibliographies come in many different forms, with many different conventions.
In this class, you will be required to write-up an MLA style annotated bibliography.
However, all annotations across disciplines require: critical analysis of the source and
summary of the source. A basic annotated bibliography may follow the following format
(each entry contains):
1) standard MLA-format bibliographic entry.
2) two to four sentences of summary; summarize main ideas, main points, main
arguments; identify the writer’s main position; directly quote useful portions or
information.
3) two to four sentences of critical evaluation or analysis; what is the genre of the
source; what is the author's perspective and why; why is the source useful or relevant;
how does the source relate to your research topic.
