Name: _________________________________ Date: _________________ Period: ______ Barf Bag Lab Alcoholic Fermentation What happens during fermentation? OBJECTIVE: Students will identify the reactants and products of alcoholic fermentation and determine whether alcoholic fermentation is occurring by analyzing the results of their barf bag lab. ** This lab will be run a little backwards! Since the reaction will need time to work, we will follow the procedure, THEN fill out the background information! ** PROCEDURE: 1. Open your ziplock bag. 2. Add 2 tsp yeast to your ziplock bag. 3. Add ½ cup of cereal to your ziplock bag. (This may have already been done for you.) 4. Carefully add 1 cup of warm water to your ziplock bag. (You may need someone to hold the bag for you so it doesn’t spill.) 5. Carefully compress all the air out of the ziplock bag and seal it closed. 6. Gently shake/squish the bag so that all of the contents mix. 7. Record observations about what the bag looks like to start. 8. Hide the bag from view (you can build a binder fort to do this) and let it rest for approximately 15 minutes. 9. After your teacher calls time, pull out your ziplock bag (keep it sealed!) and make observations and draw conclusions about what has happened! Consider the reactants and what reaction may occur. What might it look like? How could you be sure of what is occurring? __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ VARIABLE: Half the class will be using one type of cereal, and half the class will have another type of cereal. How do you think the cereal type could affect this experiment? Think about what the differences are between the two cereals! __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ Mod A – Cells & Heredity (S/P) Lesson 1.6 Page 18 Fry 2019 Name: _________________________________ Date: _________________ Period: ______ OBSERVATIONS: Conduct observations before and after the reaction. Compare and contrast what it looked like at the beginning versus the end of the experiment. Also compare the two types of cereal and how they reacted.
