BACKGROUND STATEMENT
For this film I was inspired by the story and themes of the film Bird Box (Bier, 2018), which explores one
family’s escape from a mysterious source that forces humans to commit suicide when it enters one’s eyesight.
Themes of survival, death, worldwide disaster, sensory perception and family influenced my intentions and
led me to create a story involving two brothers who attempt to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where a
globally spread constant ringing noise freezes each individual in time and forces them to fall into a state of
coma, forcing them to become permanently dazed unless their ears are covered with headphones. I decided
that the plot of the film would be about the estranged brothers, Jesse and Sam, surviving in such a world while
struggling with their toxic relationship as siblings, their parents’ death as a result of the disaster and their battle
against other survivors for limited resources. This allowed me to demonstrate how the characters change over
time by learning to reconnect, take care of each other and cooperate in order to achieve their goal of survival
as well as preserve each other as the remaining members of their family. I wanted the older brother, Jesse, to
struggle with protecting and becoming a father figure for his brother while mourning the loss of his parents.
