BRIEF HISTORY OF LAWN TENNIS
In 1873 LAWN TENNIS ▪ Major Walter Wingfield invented a version of Real Tennis that can be played
outdoors on a lawn. The game called ‘Sphairistike’ Greek for "playing ball"and first introduced it to
Wales United Kingdom. Played on hour-glass courts on Manor House lawns by rich English people. This
is really where today's tennis developed. Wingfield deals Sphairistike in boxes that feature two net
posts, a net, rackets, and India rubber balls, plus instructions about laying out the court and actually
playing the game. Wingfield’s boxes kick start the modern form of tennis, though the one thing that
doesn’t work is the name, and Wingfield soon realizes that his subtitle "lawn tennis" is much better than
greek word "Sphairistike". 1877 ▪ FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP & History of tennis ▪ The very first
World Tennis Championship was held at Worple Road in Wimbledon,London (UK).The sponsors were
the All England Croquet Club. Only 22 players entered the Mens Singles, which was the only event.
Spectators paid a mere one shilling to watch the finals. The first winner of this mens event in the tennis
history of Wimbledon was Spencer Gore.
SCORING SYSTEM
To achieve this goal, a competitive tennis athlete must...
 earn a minimum of 4 points to win a game.
 play at least 6 games to win a set.
 win no less than 2 sets (at times 3 sets) to close out a match.
Prior to playing a match, competitors must decide who or which team will serve first and which sides of
the court each competitor or team will initiate game play. A coin toss or racquet spin is the typical action
performed to determine the privilege of picking first.The winner(s) of the coin toss or racquet spin
determines either the serving options or which end of the court to initiate game play. The competitor(s)
who lost the toss or spin determines the second option.
Tennis Scoring Game
A tennis serve initiates game play and the player serving serves the entire game. In order to win the
game, a tennis competitor must win a number of points. Each game consists of a series of points and
remember a competitor must accumulate at least four points to win the game. The servers score is
always announced first the entire game with tennis terminology
voiced in a manner unique to tennis.
 Points Earned 0 = 0 Games Points or 'Love'
 Points Earned 1 = 15 Game Points
 Points Earned 2 = 30 Game Points
 Points Earned 3 = 40 Game Points
 Points Earned 4 = Game Over (2 Point Advantage Required)

head that is elliptical in shape. Incidentally, the weight ranges between 245 grams to 340
grams, depending upon individual preferences and style of play.

quite popular amongst professional players, for traits akin to their tension bearing ability,
stability, and elasticity.
2. Synthetic Strings: are made from nylon, multifilament, textured, Kevlar, and polyester
strings, to ensure durability and endurance.
