Title: Teacher's influence to my autoethnography
To understand oneself is to know him or her better by knowing his or her likes and dislikes,
ambitions and goals and also to know their experiences in life. Thus, this will give the better
overview of a person's life was and will be. Even so, the decisions for me undertaking the
bachelor of education program here at the University of Goroka was not simple or sudden. It
came from meeting of several strands of people in my life. Of all people, my teachers; which are
one of the sources of elements found in Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System Theory who are
the greatest influencers of my life , has helped me to make the best choices in life and
understand the importance of who I am today. However, this write up will elaborate more on
how I've come this far in spite the challenges and influences that had come along the way.
According to my parents serving others is the best job and so being a teacher is a blessing to
them and myself as helping and serving others is what really matters to me and so teaching is
encompassed in it. Thus, it is a lifetime and good record of experience to serve and build better
standards of citizens towards the humanity rather than being an accountant, engineer, pilot,
etc., which was to serve oneself.
It is such a privilege to be a teacher as teachers are the main character in every lives of a person
attending schools of any kind. The essence of good teaching is the ability to meld together the
concerns embodied in both craft and moral pedagogical questions ( Alan R. Tom, 1987) which,
emphasis that teachers are the key role player in every students lives. Kelvin S. and Rosemary S.
states in Motives Behind Teaching that teaching is to help students individually, keep growing
as a person, keep connecting with others and keep learning new ideas. Thus, it is the way to
witness to the diversity of growth in young people and their joy in learning ( Education
Psychology, pg. 8, 2009).
Even so, in my twelfth year of studying my friends; as to peer pressure has encouraged me very
much to choose the career as them in life but me having this desire of serving humanities and
with the encouragement from my high school teacher who once said that '' to be a teacher is to
be a role model to everyone and that includes students, friends, families and communities that
we live in'', because teachers are the root of the master- mind to influence the young minds for
changes. Hence, this motivates me as I want to be an influencer of change to the society.
The entire formal and informal curriculum of the schools is filtered through the minds and
hearts of classroom teachers, making the quality of school learning dependent on the quality of
teachers. We cannot improve the quality of education in our schools without improving the
quality of teachers in them (John Smith, pg. 27, 1987). Thus, one can only change when having a
standardized and qualified teacher who is more than just doing the job for money but for the
love to change the citizens of the nation with good intentions of high self-esteem. Even though,
money can be a burden to me and my family, but this love to serve the humanities cannot be
hidden away as the world is changing in so many ways.
At the glance, auto-ethnography refers to the methods of which it allows to explore personal
experiences through the process of self-reflection and writing. Even so, Bronfenbrenner's
theory states that the most influential stage/level in human lives is the microsystem where oneself can have experienced. Therefore, society must be an educated society today- to progress,
to grow and even to survive (Peter F. Dricker e.t al.). Thus, this gives an impression and
motivation as an educated elites to be a model of change by serving the right course to the
right minds. Hence, being here at University of Goroka is not a mistake for me.
