Findings &Suggestions
The study conducted in Bangalore has observed a great acceptance for online retailing, income and occupation have impact
on online buying behavior and gender has no influence on online buying behavior as per the ANOVA test. Online retailing is
popular among both genders and middle aged consumers, mostly employees and middle income groups are opting to
purchase online.
Durable products are high in demand for example electronics, mobiles, etc. and most customers buy at least once in a month.
Convenience and to avail discounts/offers are the top two reasons to purchase online. Customers also use online platform to
check variety of goods available. A lot of complaints around payment and delivery system are recorded and if these can be
addressed well along with assurance regarding quality of the product customers might increase their online purchasing. As per
the survey and customer responses the following suggestions were made:
Customer’s main concern is about quality of products and prompt delivery (delayed or wrong item delivery), if e-tailers
can employ proper supply chain management and provide assurance about product quality and timely delivery, the
customer will be satisfied and become loyal.
Providing better description of products with 3D-image and simulation technique to know how it looks on a person,
etc. can help customer better understand the features and look of the product.
Transparency is the main requirement of customer, even though 24x7 customer service and track order facility is
available with most e-tailers, it should be more efficient and effective and further e-mail and mobile notifications
regarding delivery will further strengthen e-retailer’s commitment for prompt delivery of goods.
Credibility in payment should be ensured. Steps should to be taken to sort out issues of security and payments by
debit/credit cards. Banking laws and regulations need to be adjusted so that electronic fund transfers and credit card
payments become easier and safer.
Price comparison is another important feature which the customer looks for so that he can compare competitive
products pricing, and make a decision about product purchase.
Honest disclosure of features of products and terms of purchase and replacement should be clearly mentioned in the
retailer’s website.
Clarity in pricing and discounts on the products, if any should be clearly mentioned.
Post sale service facility is one feature which is required by customer even though the facility is provided by the
product company itself, these e-tailers should ensure that product companies fulfill those norms on behalf of the
customer.
By making these few additions, online retailers can attract more customers and consumer loyalty can be improved
Cross Border Destinations
One of the top cross border destinations for Indian online buyers is United States. Some key categories include Automotive,
Baby supplies, Toys, clothing, footwear and accessories, jewelry, watches, cosmetics, health products and digital
entertainment. Along with some favorable factors like increasing internet penetration there as some challenges as well which
needs to be removed like high shipping cost, import duties and complexities in returns and exchanges
While shopping cross border, how do these customers shop? In a survey conducted by Pitney Bowes, majority of Indian cross
border shopping consumers find products on retailer's website directly . Some of the other key findings of the survey are

Key reasons why Indian consumers prefer shopping internationally
Product quality is better, the products are interesting, have better prices and more variety are some of the key motivations for
youth in India to shop internationally. Trust on online stores and their product authenticity are some more reasons which
promote cross border shopping. Finally return policies are very flexible on international websites compared to domestic market
places. Payment safety and Coupons, promotions and discounts available on these sites are few more drivers which affect
international purchasing.
Product variety is not a big reason for consumers from Tier 1 cities however for Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities Product variety is a
driven to shop internationally as well as domestically. In Tier 1 cities consumer's shop online due to more trust and less
complicated fulfillment services e.g. companies like DHL, FedEx would be delivering your product who have high service
standards as compared to some unorganized player in India domestically

Are the customers loyal to certain brands? If yes what are they?
As per the primary interviews conducted with professionals in Snapdeal and Jabong, very few customers (5-10%) are brand
oriented and that too for very specific categories like expensive electronics cameras (e.g. Nikon and Canon) and Smart TV
(Samsung and Sony) have maximum sale in their respective categories. As a rough estimate products above 15000-20000
INR customers are more sure which brand they want to buy
In lower price categories customers are not that brand oriented like (headphones, mobile covers, T–shirts) and can go for any
known brand to them even they can explore a new brand as well
Indian customers are very price centric and 2-3% variation in discounts on the same price
Brands play role majorly when there is any new product launched with any specific/unique feature like (I phone 7), Samsung
Curve smart TV etc. Brand also play a role when the there are very lucrative discounts/ exchange offers on any specific brand.

Why do they want buy imported goods?
There are many factors boosting the sales of imported products. Listed below are few of them.
1.
Foreign companies generally target premium, elite consumers whereas Indian companies generally target price
conscious, mass consumers. The fact that consumer lifestyle is almost always a top-down phenomena hence the
MNC product appears more 'desirable' despite the fact that they are often produced in the same country.
2.
Another vital factor for Indians favoring imported brands is their affection and inclination towards foreign celebrities.
Hence following or replicating their products or brands is a huge boost for the international market in the elite and sub
elite divisions. For example the sales of Samsung S5 were boosted because of Cristiano Ronaldo's endorsement of
the product.
3.
From a specific survey done by towards better quality is identified as the most important reason for preferring
imported items with around 90% positive response.
4.
In addition to the above points, international brand value, better performance and poor promotion of local items are
the reasons for preferring imported items.
5.
In the world of globalization, consumers are moving internationally helping their families in India to get open to foreign
brands and a lot of times buy internationally. More Often consumers go for those products for which they get a better
visibility through their relations settled internationally.
6.
Ease of returns play a vital role in online shopping. Considering the reliable network of companies like fed ex, DHL
consumers enjoy a sense of safety and reliability towards their products.
7.
Majority of the consumers buy products online because of their Availability and product portfolio in the Indian market.
For Example, newegg, one of the most popular online stores for pc parts has recently started shipping its wares in
India. Even though the price of most of the products is higher than any other online stores but still consumers prefer
to buy them because of their low or no availability in the Indian market.
