Play What is a one-act play? A one-act play is a presentation of a story that takes less than an hour. It doesn’t offer the audience complexity of the plot and often goes straight to the point about characters’ personalities and transition of events. One-act plays keep the production with few scenes where characters in the story can easily be attached with its audience about the play’s theme. When did one-act play flourish? One-act plays started in the 18th and 19th century and can be traced back to Ancient Greece, Cyclops- a forest God and Euripides. What is the main purpose of a one-act play? Compared to any forms of fictional displays and production, one-act plays are created to entertain the audience by touching their feelings and emotions about the play’s central theme. Usually, one-act plays cover various topics ranging from issues in society, values, and other elements present in human life. What are the elements of a one-act play? A. Theme The theme is where the playwright or writer’s personal values are highlighted and were translated through the development of the plot and characters. When looking for the theme of the play, we can ask questions like: • What is the play about? • What is the ethical position or values accentuated in the play? B. Character A character in a one-act play can be a person, animal, or any mythological or fictional creature. As long as the character has a dialogue, personality and contributes to the development of the story. There are four types of characters in a story: 1. Static Character- This character stays the same throughout the story. The character played no changes of personality or behavior. 2. Dynamic Character- This character transitions him/herself due to the development of the storyline. The character may be provoked to change or an event tapped the character to change for good or bad. 3. Flat Character- This character does not usually appear in every scene of the story. The plot usually gives this character a limited spotlight for the audience to get to know him/her. 4. Round Character- This character is known in the story who’s very prominent in the story. The audience knows him/her best because of his/her striking behavior or personality. C. Plot Since one-act play duration takes less than an hour, it is important that the plot doesn’t have any complicated layers and foreshadowing. One-act plays usually target the central issue in the story and free the character and audience from flashbacks and futuristic views. D. Dialogue With one-act play’s limited time, the dialogue of the characters need not be terse; it can be concise but gives an impactful effect on the audience. The characters' conversation should bring the audience to feel dramatic about the scene or any emotions that the play targets to portray in its audience. What are the features of a one-act play? • One-act play is written in a concise manner • It doesn’t have any breaks • No need for extra characters, the main characters who’ll significantly contributed to the story are prioritized • Most of the time, there’s only 1-2 settings • No flashbacks, the play starts where it should begin E.
