MATTER ARISING:
Following the performance of the Year 12 Students, the Vice Principal academics for secondary
school held a meeting with Year 12 class teachers and subject teachers to discuss the
performance of the students in the just concluded GCE. Mr Timothy stated emphatically that we
have to do our best because parents are expecting the best from their wards.
The meeting focused on Challenges, Suggestions and Practical Solutions to raise the bar.
To begin with, the meeting started at 4:05 pm. The student’s results were projected on the board
for the teachers to assess.
On Challenges, it was generally acknowledged that the students:
●
●
●
●
results should improve drastically.
have to keep working hard in order to develop their skills in their various subjects.
have to get out of having F9 and Passes.
have to concentrate in their studies.
On Suggestions, some points were raised which includes the following:
● Mr Iniobong suggested that the students will learn with a more resolved mind if their
results is posted on the walls of the classroom.
● Identification of key words used in examination questions is essential.
● On answering strategy, it was agreed that the students have to know about the meaning
of various words like, list, explain, enumerate, define etc.
● Using of negative words on the students should not be encouraged.
● The learning process should be easier and effective.
● Being firm and strict will give the students a tougher attitude to the learning process as
records of absenteeism was noticed in the results.
● Mr. Taiwo suggested that students who are poor should be separated from the
outstanding students. On this Mr. Timothy said teachers should engage students in the
same classroom differently.
● There should be more time to spread them for practical classes and all students need to be
involved in the process.
● Certain subjects like Further Mathematics should be evaluated, that they may be making
the student’s workload bulky and not giving them enough time to fully maximize their
potentials within their intellectual limits.
On Practical solutions, the following points were stated:
● Questions should be given with expected marks attached
● Teachers should hold certain parents to ransom by meeting them in person to get them
involved
● Projecting the examiners marking guide on the board is essential as this will give the
students knowledge on how scores are graded. It can also push them away from making
aC
● To excel in courses like History and Literature, the students need to be educated properly
on essay writing.
● More mock examinations will be coming up
● More activities and individual corrections should happen in classes.
● Teachers should talk less and do more of individual corrections.
● Teachers should have a strategy on how they can cover carefully aspects that will help
them make a good result.
● Questions should be on the board while the teacher should be on the students
In conclusion, Mr. Timothy said that, the Teachers should not sleep on any child. They
should not write off any child as there is still room for improvement or drastic change.
Asides making sure large populations of the students are able to score A’s, the vice principal
made the teachers to realize that C6 is the minimum requirement, and it is also the least score
a student should be getting. The meeting ended at 5:30pm.
