`JUICE’ Launch to Jupiter
`JUICE’ stands for : Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer
Ariane Rocket
Booster detached 2 mins after launch; Booster provides 90% of
thrust.
JUICE separation requires high speeds to escape pull of Earth
Faring protects JUICE. Weight: 6,000 kg at launch
Velocity: 7km/second!
Solar panels deployed – 85 square meters
Power to operate satellite – comes from sun
Instruments must survive low temperatures and an atmosphere very
radioactive. (high radiation)
8 year journey to Jupiter – arrive 2031
• Jupiter has 80-90 moons (Saturn 83)
• 35 fly-by’s of Ganymede, Callisto
and Europa – take about 3.5 yrs
• Icey crust, may have oceans of
water under crust …..
• Signs of life – microbes, small fish ?
• Information sent to Earth - takes 1
hr to get here.
