FIVE PILLARS OF ROAD SAFETY PILLAR I: QUALIFIED DRIVERS • Individuals with sufficient driving skills, and knowledge on road safety and proper road courtesy, whose eligibility is determined by passing the LTO-conducted theoretical and practical examinations. Developing qualified drivers is an important pillar in the LTO road safety advocacy since human factor is the major cause of road crashes; THE QUALIFIED DRIVERS What is the qualification of a driver? • Valid driver's license. Clean driving record. Sound knowledge of road safety regulations. Working knowledge of local roads and routes. PILLAR II: ROAD WORTHY MOTOR VEHICLES • Motor vehicles and its relevant parts are compliant with national standards and international vehicle safety conventions. • Ensuring roadworthiness of vehicles decreases the likelihood of failure in vehicle functioning, thus reduces the risk of a road crash; Roadworthiness or street worthiness is a property or ability of a car, bus, truck or any kind of automobile to be in a suitable operating condition or meeting acceptable standards for safe driving and transport of people, baggage or cargo in roads or streets, being therefore street-legal. PILLAR III: TRAFFIC DISCIPLINE • It is the conformity/ compliance to road traffic laws, rules, regulations and/ or a code of behavior. • Traffic discipline paves the way for order, organization and the unhampered traffic flow; TRAFFIC RULES AND ETIQUETTE • • • • • • • • Drive at a safe speed!
