Public Speaking Workshop – 60 minute workshop Title Public Speaking 101 How You Can Become a Better Public Speaker Abstract Public speaking, oration, oratory is the process of communicating information to a live audience. The type of information communicated is deliberately structured to inform, persuade, and entertain. To understand that communication is a two-way process in which the listener evaluates the speaker’s effectiveness, the student will learn to improve listening, organizing, adapting to audiences, and orally present messages. In this workshop we will use the activity of “Shark Tank” to give students time to break out into groups and make 2-minute presentations, which will be timed, and try to convince the audience to vote for their idea. Topic Leadership Description Content/Activity Time Introduction5 min. Introduce NSLS and co-sponsors, thank and explain rules and why we are doing this. Content: Participants are broken up into groups (teams: 5-6 per team) Activity: Groups will be tasked with creating an event that incorporates the 40 min. topic of leadership. Requires: Budget Purpose Location (In Kean) Time Team Name Presentations 10 min. Wrap up and questions/ Winner Announcement 5 min. TOTAL 60 min. Audience Interaction Participants will judge each group as they give a 2-minute presentation of their event proposal. The audience will judge each team and their ideas. An anonymous poll will be presented at the end of all representations.
