Today’s video presentation will be about our proposal to conduct a community service
project between the students of the University of Nottingham Malaysia with the residents of
Joy Garden Old Folk’s Home.
This video presentation will start by going over the definition of community service
and its impacts on the community. Once that has been established, I will introduce our
community service project partner, Joy Garden Old Folk’s Home. I will be identifying their
current and future needs, before sharing the proposed activities we have planned for this project,
as well as the benefits it will have on the community. To close off the presentation, I will make
a pitch and list some ways the public can aid our Community Service Partner as well.
Community Service is defined as work that is performed by either an individual or a
group of people that its beneficial and for the betterment of their community. Usually, this work
is performed without any form of compensation.
Community Service work has multiple impacts on society. Firstly, it establishes
stronger connections within members of the community as everyone has the opportunity to
spend time together and bond while doing community service together. Secondly, it also raises
social awareness and responsibility, especially amongst the individuals conducting the work.
This is because they are directly placed in the environment and with people who need help.
Thus, they will gain first-hand experience of the issues and plight that they may have. From
there, they can become more socially aware and also feel a sense of responsibility to take care
and give back to their community from this experience. Lastly, community service also
establishes friendships and contact within members of the community since everyone has the
chance to mingle and network with one another during the project.
I would now like to introduce our CSP Partner, Joy Garden Old Folk’s Home. The home
was established in February 2008 and is located in Taman Perindustrian Sri Haneco in
Semenyih. A total of 43 residents can be housed in the home, which aims to provide shelter
and care to their elderly residents who are neglected, poor, mentally weak, wheelchair-ridden,
and destitute.
Two current needs of the home have been identified. One of their current needs is to
fulfil the needs of the residents to the best of their ability by ensuring the residents are provided
with enough care and attention during their stay in the home. During this time, the home also
aims to provide opportunities for the residents to hone new skills and maintain hobbies to
satisfy more than just their psychological needs. The second need identified is to maintain and
upkeep the condition of the facilities and amenities provided in the home to make sure they are
in a good and usable condition for all the residents to use. If the facilities and amenities are not
properly maintained, it would make it difficult to provide the much-needed care to the residents.
Furthermore, two future needs of the home have also been identified. The first is to
continue ensuring that the home can provide a comfortable and attentive environment for all
their residents. The second need is to for the home to obtain sufficient funding and manpower
to maintain their facilities so that they can keep up smooth operations in the home.
I will now discuss the proposed activities to be conducted during the community service
Project. Two bonding activities will be conducted, which will be cooking and baking. Then,
our CSP activity will be conducting repair-work around certain parts of the home.
For the cooking activity, it will be conducted in the cooking area of the home. All
participants will do the meal prep together and also cook the meal together. Once the food has
been cooked, we will go on a lunch break where everyone can eat the food they have cooked
together. For this activity, the food chosen on the menu for this day takes into consideration
the different dietary and health needs the residents may have. For example, some residents may
not be able to eat foods that are too salty or fatty because of high blood pressure or heart disease.
Thus, the menu for this activity incorporates ingredients that are good for health and overall
diet too.
Next, the baking activity will be conducted the following day in the kitchen and dining
area of the home. Everyone will be involved in preparing and baking together, and the baked
goods will be eaten during the break whereby all the participants can mingle and enjoy their
baking. For the menu chosen for this activity too, due care was taken to ensure the dietary needs
of the residents are met. Concerns such as the sweetness of the baked goods was considered,
and the menu was curated to be less sweet and using ingredients that are healthy whilst able to
emulate the taste and consistency of a dessert.
The repair-work will be done over the span of two days. On Day One, the focus will be
on realigning the doors on the premises. Residents and the students will work together to go
around the premises of the home to plan and conduct these repairs. Due to the concerns of the
residents becoming very tired from the moving and repairs, breaks and rest opportunities will
be available throughout the day for them.
On Day Two of the repair-work activity, the focus will be on fixing the zinc roofing at
the washroom beside the workshop. On this day, the residents and students will work together
to plan and conduct the repair on the roof. During the organisation and planning stage of this
project, it has been noted that some residents may be unable to do such physical labour as it is
particularly strenuous. With consideration to this whilst ensuring no one is completely left out,
residents who cannot do physical labour can instead help to give directions or tools to those
doing the repair-work. Additionally, those repairing the roof can take frequent and longer
breaks throughout the activity as and when they want to.
These activities are particularly beneficial to the community. One, it can establish skills
and hobbies, especially during the bonding activities. Participants could also potentially pick
up cooking and baking as a hobby after the project. Secondly, the activities are especially
beneficial with developing stronger bonds within the community. Thirdly, social awareness is
increased as the community work together and make an attempt to understand and help one
another.
To close off the presentation, I would like to urge the public to lend a helping hand to
Joy Garden Old Folk’s Home. The Covid-19 pandemic has hit the Old Folk’s Home hard, and
while resources and materials have been difficult to come by, manpower and services have
been even harder to obtain—especially with the risk it poses to the citizens if other people were
to enter the safe bubble of the home since they could potentially infect and spread the virus
within the home itself. Now that the chance to help has come as Malaysia enters its endemic
phase, we should jump into action and provide them with the long overdue help that they need.
Some ways that the public can help is by donating money or supplies to the home, by
visiting the home and organising community service events or even by spreading the word
about them on social media to garner more attention to the home and their mission.
Thank you.
