How to track medications:
Storage and Monitoring:
•
•
•
•
Store samples in a locked location.
Keep samples well organized. Separate drugs with similar names.
Schedule a time each month to check for expired samples and dispose according to law.
Keep a tracking log. Record the patient's name, the medication given, the date dispensed, and
the lot number.
Any activity done on the cabinets is digitally recorded and synced to the cloud in real time. Then,
from any tablet, computer or other electronic device, you can view all drug activity and
inventory levels in any web browser of your choosing. All data and reports are easy to read and
retrieving specific data for a particular day or week is completely straightforward. Introductory
training on the cloud-based system takes just 30 minutes.
Medication inventory management no longer requires piles of paperwork to maintain accurate
counts of which drugs went where
Access:
•
•
•
Only physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants with prescribing authority may
dispense medications.
Do not allow employees to request or access samples for personal use.
Do not allow medicine to be dispensed without physician, nurse practitioner, or physician
assistant authorization.
Dispensing:
•
•
•
•
Sample medications should be labeled with the patient's name, dosage, frequency, and route.
When retrieving samples, authorized personnel should review the order, check the drug name
on the package, confirm the expiration date, and verify patient drug allergies.
The prescriber should discuss proper administration, storage and drug side effects. Written
instruction may also be provided to the patient.
Document, document, document. In the patient's record, note which sample medication was
used, the lot number, and the time spent educating the patient on the proper use of the
medication.

Top 10 Prescription Medications in the
U.S. (August 2020)
Most popular prescriptions:
Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
Drug Class: Statins
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) is a statin used to treat high cholesterol. Prior to its release as
generic atorvastatin in 2011, it was considered the top drug by sales for most of the
previous decade. It is still one of the most prescribed statins, and though not as
inexpensive as simvastatin (Zocor), the generic price has continued to drop.

Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril)
Drug Class: ACE Inhibitors
Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) is an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure, and in
combination with other medications to treat heart failure. Lisinopril was the third ACE
inhibitor to become available. It may be more convenient than some of the other options
because it is longer acting, meaning you only need to take one tablet per day rather
than two or three.

as low as $4.00
30 tablets of lisinopril 20mg
Albuterol (Accuneb, Ventolin, Proair, Proventil)

Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Unithroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid) is a synthetically prepared
thyroid hormone that can improve symptoms of thyroid deficiency. There are several

interchangeable. Generic levothyroxine is very inexpensive, though most of the brands
available are also affordable.

Amlodipine (Norvasc, Amvaz)
Drug Class: Calcium Channel Blockers

pressure and chest pain (angina). It is one of the most common heart meds and is on

even available for free at some pharmacies.

Gabapentin (Neurontin)

moisture (not in the bathroom). Store the oral solution in the refrigerator.

epilepsy and nerve pain. While it is not an opioid, it
has recently been linked to misuse and can lead to

reported stability studies, the USP default beyond-use date of 14 days
refrigeration may be used.
Drug Class: Proton Pump Inhibitors
Omeprazole (Prilosec) is a proton pump inhibitor
(PPI) used to treat certain conditions where there is
too much acid in the stomach, like ulcers and
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is the
most used — and least expensive — compared to
