1. The start with the Stanford prison experiment received many criticisms because of
the environment that the prisoners were kept which was unsafe. It can be noted
that prisoners rights were violated as the conditions of the prison was unclean for
instance they were sometimes forced to use buckets to relieve themselves and
sometimes they would not be allowed to empty these buckets and this caused
distress among the prisoners and guards did as they pleased(Weiten, 2022). The
prisoners would even be denied access to the bathrooms by the guards. And also
the prisoners suffered humiliation from the guards for instance the guards would
punish the prisoners by stripping them naked take their beds and force them into
solitary confinement and this was humiliation to prisoners(Stanford prison
experiment, 2015). The participants suffered harassment as they were sometimes
forced to do menial work such as cleaning toilets with their hands. More so, the
prisoners were not protected from psychological harm and those who asked to
leave would be denied hence they only released those they saw were traumatised
thus the participants mental health was at risk. The participants rights were violated
as they also endured physical abuse and the good guards did not acknowledge
the behaviour of the bad guards(Stanford prison experiment, 2015) . Push-ups
were a form of physical punishment that participants were imposed to by the
guards. However it can be noted that Zimbardo argues that the benefits gained
about understanding human behaviour and how society can improve should
balance the distress caused by the study(Weiten, 2022). A Therefore to a greater
extend the participants rights were violated as the prisoners were humiliated,
physically abused , lived in unsanitary environment and also their mental health
was at risk.
2. The ethical guidelines as according to the HPCSA are that it sets the standards
that are relevant for healthcare training and practices. In the case of the Stanford
prison experiment there was lack of compliance and the health standard was not
up to date as the place was unsanitary. There also should be ethical guidelines in
place however this protocol was not followed. It can be noted that the participants
in the prison experiment were not protected. Another guideline of the HPCSA is
that patients are supposed to stay in a safe environment and must be fully aware
of everything around their environment.
