-AIR TRAVEL VOCABULARY1. Departures: A departure is a flight leaving the airport. EX: It took a long time to go through security because there were a lot of departures scheduled at the same time. 2. Take off: when the plane leaves the ground. EX: I don’t mind flying, but I always get a little nervous during take off. 3. Passport: a document that proves a person's identification and nationality. EX: I had to cancel my flight because I realised that I have lost my passport. 4. Security: Security is where passengers have their possessions checked before they get on their flight. EX: We have to take our shoes off when we go through security. 5. Boarding gate: The gate is where passengers show their boarding passes and get on the plane. EX: Our flight leaves from gate H6. I’ll meet you there. 6. Suitcase: A suitcase is a bag with a handle that you use for carrying clothes when you are travelling. EX: My suitcase was too heavy, so I had to pay an extra fee. 7. Customs: Customs is the place at an airport where government officials check the products that are entering the country. EX: I have never had my bags checked at Customs. 8. Aisle seat: The long empty space between the seats of an airplane where you can walk. The seat that is next to the aisle EX: I prefer aisle seats because it is easier to get up and use the restroom when you have an aisle seat. 9. Overhead compartment/locker: A part of the plane where you can keep your small bags and baggage. EX: The overhead locker opened accidentally and one of the bags fall down. 10. Carry-on bag: The bag passengers take on the plane with them. EX: My carry-on bag is pretty small. I think I’ll be able to fit it under the seat. 11. Flight attendant: man or woman who provides service for passengers during a flight. EX: Flight attendants have to be very patient, especially on long flights. It’s not easy to make everybody on a plane happy! 12. Economy class: Economy class tickets are the cheapest tickets that airlines offer. Economy class seats are the smallest seats on the plane. EX: I don’t mind sitting in economy class, but it’s true that the seats are smaller, and there’s less leg room. 13. Folding tray: A small table used to place small objects upon, and most commonly used to place meals. EX: The folding tray was dirty, so I couldn’t put any of my meals there.
