FINAL PART 1: PERSONAL REFLECTION A summary presentation by Cheryl Lindsey De Anza Winter 2023 ICS D26 Keiffer-Lewis INTRODUCTION I decided to take Intro to LGBTQ+ Studies because I have always been a supporter, advocate and ally to the LGBTQ+ community. The reason why I chose this class was because I wanted to expand my knowledge on the members of the community and learn about the historic events that paved the way for the younger generation of members. I feel it would not only broaden my understanding on how others identify themselves and their orientation(s) but become a even more educated and informed ally for the community. • Photo used from https://www.amazon.com/IntroductionLGBTQ-Studies-Cross-Disciplinary-Educationalebook/dp/B0B5VY3VWC [1] SUMMARY • What I knew before this class was almost very basic. I already knew the different identifications and orientations but lacked the full understanding on some things. For example the “Q” in LGBTQ+ stands for Queer. I had an understanding of it but was not fully aware of its meaning. • I was also aware that the LGBTQ+ Community has faced a lot of backlash, discrimination, and stigma throughout the years but after this class I feel like that was just the surface of it all. I was not aware about certain historical events that lead to the progression and civil rights for the community. Additionally, I was not aware of how the LGBTQ+ community lived during times of oppression and secrecy during the early 1900s. • Additionally learning about famous historical figures that were considered a part of the LGBTQ community was really surprising. • Also, learning how different parts of the world and cultures viewed members of the LGBTQ+ community. SUMMARY • Here is brief timeline of major moments in LGBTQ+ History. Some of these we learned about in this class. This time line shows how things are improving the LGBTQ+ Community but despite all these successes there still needs to be more work to be done. • Picture credit: https://www.behance.net/gallery /62172911/Major-Moments-inLGBT-History-InfographicTimeline [2] PERSONAL THOUGHTS • I personally really enjoyed this class. I feel all the wiser and better equipped to stand up for the rights of members of the LGTBQ+ Community. I feel that learning all the correct terms of how others identify themselves and consider their orientations made me understand better and also know what terms are and are not appropriate. • This class is very beneficial for understanding the background and history of the LGBTQ+ Community while also showing how prominent it was in our country’s past. • The class also showcased how different cultures view, experience, celebrate, and also live with those in the LGBTQ+ community while also covering their own discrimination and struggles that they have to endure. This is very important for society and the rest of the world to know in order to make the world a more inclusive, accepting, and loving place for all. WHAT ALLY CONNECTIONS CAN YOU COMMIT TO? • Here are 7 ways to be a better ally. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Be open to learn, listen and educate yourself. Check your privilege. Don't assume. Think of 'ally' as an action rather than a label. Confront your own prejudices and unconscious bias. Know that language matters. Know that you will mess up sometimes – breathe, apologise, and ask for guidance Sourced from: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/news/2020/dec/7-ways-you-can-be-better-lgbtq-ally [3] REFERNCES: 1. https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-LGBTQ-Studies-Cross-DisciplinaryEducational-ebook/dp/B0B5VY3VWC 2. https://www.behance.net/gallery/62172911/Major-Moments-in-LGBTHistory-Infographic-Timeline 3. https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/news/2020/dec/7-ways-you-can-bebetter-lgbtq-ally
