CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD FIRST AIDER

Gentle – does not cause pain and panic

Observant – notices all signs

Resourceful – makes the best use of things at hand

Tactful – does not frighten the victim

Sympathetic – comforts and reassures the victim

FIRST AID PRIORITIES
• Assess situation quickly and calmly.
• Protect yourself and any casualties from danger.
• Prevent cross infection between yourself and casualty.
• Assess the casualty , identify injury or nature of illness
• Give early treatment , and treat casualties with most
serious condition first.
• Arrange for appropriate help. 114/112

PROTECTION FROM INFECTION
 Wash your hands and wear latex free disposable gloves.
 Wear plastic apron and plastic glasses when dealing with
large amount of body fluids.
 Do not breathe, cough or sneeze over a wound
 Do not touch a wound nor a dressing with bare hand that will
be into contact with a wound.
 Do dispose of waste safely.

CARE OF PERSONAL BELONGINGS
 Make sure that casualty’s belonging are with them at all
times.
 If you have to search for clues ,do so in front of reliable
witness
 If possible ask the casualty’s consent
 Ensure that clothing, personal belongings and medication
accompany casualty to hospital or taken into police
custody
