1 Overview
1
Overview
With the rapid development of mobile broadband (MBB), there are increasingly requirements
for capacity expansion in densely populated urban areas. Adding sites becomes an inevitable
method to meet coverage and capacity requirements. However, adding traditional macro base
stations require high costs and long periods, and operators require a time- and cost-effective
network deployment solution. Therefore, Huawei introduces light base stations.
Compared with traditional macro base stations, light base stations feature small size,
light weight, and environment integration that enables the light base stations to be fast
deployed. Light base stations are preferentially selected when base stations need to be added
in densely populated urban areas.
The AAU5940, important RF module in light base stations, uses the AAS technology to
integrate the functions of antennas and the RF module. In addition, it uses the user-friendly
design so that the site can be easily obtained and the AAU5940 can be easily deployed.
The AAU5940 adopts the software-defined frequency technology to flexibly meet operators'
different coverage requirements.
The AAU5940 can reduce about 0.8 dB feeder loss by incorporating the functions of RF
modules into the antenna and further improves the coverage capability.
The AAU5940 has a beautiful appearance and simplifies site acquisition, which can be
installed horizontally or vertically on a pole, or on a wall. Figure 1-1, Figure 1-2 and Figure
1-3 show the AAU5940 modules installed on a pole along the streets, installed on the top of a
building and installed on a wall, respectively.

When an AAU5940 is horizontally installed, adjusting its electrical downtilt angle is not
recommended.

The RET adjustment applies only to narrow beams while the electrical downtilt angle of wide beams
is fixed to 0 degrees. For an AAU5940 that generates wide beams, the downtilt angle cannot be
adjusted because the RET configuration does not take effect. However, when the AAU5940
generates narrow beams instead of wide beams, the previous RET configuration takes effect.

The receiver sensitivity of UMTS, as recommended in 3GPP TS 25.104, is calculated by deducting
the antenna gain from the receiver sensitivity measured at the antenna connector on condition that
the channel rate reaches 12.2 kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) does not exceed 0.001.

The receiver sensitivity of LTE, as recommended in 3GPP TS 36.104, is calculated by deducting the
antenna gain from the receiver sensitivity measured at the antenna connector under the condition of
a 5 MHz channel bandwidth based on the FRC A1-3 in Annex A.1 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 25 RBs)
standard.

NOTE

If an AAU5940 is located at an altitude of 3500 m to 4500 m, its output power is 1 dB less than the
standard output power. If an AAU5940 is located at an altitude of 4500 m to 6000 m, its output
power is 2 dB less than the standard output power.

An AAU5940 working in GSM, UMTS, LTE, or MSR mode complies with ETSI EN 301 908
V5.2.1 and 3GPP TS 37.104.

"NxM W" indicates that the number of TX channels is N and the maximum output power of each
TX channel is M W.

The output power per carrier in the output power tables indicates the maximum output power
supported to ensure network performance.

When two LTE FDD carriers are configured, it is recommended that the power spectrum density
(PSD) of the two carriers be set to the same value. Power spectrum density = Carrier output
power/Carrier bandwidth.

“1800 MHz GSM+2100 MHz UMTS, 40 W+15 W” indicates that the maximum output power of TX
channels for 1800 MHz is 40 W and the maximum output power of TX channels for 2100 MHz is 15
W. “1800 MHz GSM+2100 MHz UMTS, 15 W+40 W” indicates that the maximum output power of
TX channels for 1800 MHz is 15 W and the maximum output power of TX channels for 2100 MHz
is 40 W, and so on.
When AAU5940 (1800 MHz) works in GL mode and the GSM carriers or the LTE carrier
(bandwidth is 1.4 MHz or 3 MHz) are configured in 1805 MHz to 1810 MHz or 1875 MHz to
1880 MHz, the maximum output power of this AAU is 2x30 W.
