Narrator’s Point of View
WHO IS TELLING THE STORY?
FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW
The narrator is a character in his/her own story.
KEY WORDS: I, we, my, us, our….
THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW
• The narrator is not a character in the story BUT has observed
what happens and is now telling it to the reader.
KEY WORDS: Character names, he, she, they, them…
THIRD PERSON OBJECTIVE
 The narrator only tells what happened AND DOES
NOT TELL THE THOUGHTS OR FEELINGS OF ANY
CHARACTERS
THIRD PERSON LIMITED
 The narrator tells what has happened AND KNOWS
THE THOUGHTS/FEELINGS OF ONLY ONE
CHARACTER
THIRD PERSON OMNISCIENT
 The narrator tells what has happened AND KNOWS
THE THOUGHTS/FEELINGS OF MORE THAN ONE
CHARACTER
STEPS FOR FINDING NARRATOR’S POINT OF VIEW
1.
Check the text for dialogue…Dialogue means the
character is speaking not the narrator. DRAW A LINE
THROUGH ALL DIALOGUE.
2. Look for evidence of key words. CIRCLE the key
words.
3. If your key words are evidence of FIRST PERSON or
SECOND PERSON, you are finished.
4. If your key words are evidence of THIRD PERSON…
YOU MUST GO BACK AND LOOK FOR EVIDENCE OF
THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS. Draw a BOX around
thoughts and feelings of the character revealed by
the narrator.
(The narrator would have to read minds to know what
a character is thinking or feeling.)
HOW TO EXPLAIN NARRATOR’S POINT OF
