Activity Sheet No. 1 Comparing Movements of Objects on Different Surfaces PROBLEM: How does the kind of surface affect the movement of an object? Materials: Safety Tips: Block of wood Spring balance hook Be Careful in handling sharp object. Never play with the powder and Sandpaper tape sandpaper. Procedure: 1. Attach a piece of sandpaper on one side of the block of wood. 2. Hook a spring balance to the block of wood. Place the wood on the table. (The sandpaper should meet the surface of the table) 3. Using a steady force, use the spring balance to pull the wood across the table at a steady speed. Record the force applied to pull the block of wood across the table. 4. Remove the sandpaper from the block of wood. Repeat step 3. Types of Blocks Force Exerted (in grams) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average With Sandpaper Without Sandpaper Observation: What have you found out? 1. Describe the surface of the block with the sandpaper. _________________________________________________________________________ 2. How about the block of wood without the sandpaper? _________________________________________________________________________ 3. What have you noticed to the block of wood with sandpaper as it is moved across the table? _________________________________________________________________________ How about the movement of the block of wood without the sandpaper? _________________________________________________________________________ 4. Which of the two types of blocks move faster? Why? _________________________________________________________________________ 5. Which of the two types of blocks move slower? Why? _________________________________________________________________________ 6. How will you describe the surface of the block with sandpaper? How about the block without the sandpaper? ____________________________________________________________________ 7. Which of the two blocks is heavier based on the average result? What do you think contributes to this? ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Drawing: Draw the block of wood in two set ups.
