Laboratory Safety Rules The chemistry laboratory is a safe place to perform activities, if you are careful. Every student must assume the responsibility of their own safety and that of their classmates. 1. Do not perform experiments that are unauthorized. Be sure that you obtain your instructor’s permission before conducting activity. 2. Study your laboratory assignment before you come to the laboratory. In case you have doubts about any part of the procedure, ask your instructor for help. 5. 10. Handle chemicals carefully. Check the label of all bottles before removing or using the contents. Do not return unused chemicals to reagent bottles. • 11. Keep combustible materials away from open flames. Examples of combustible materials are alcohol, acetone, and carbon disulfide. • 12. Handle toxic or combustible gases only under the supervision of your instructor. Use the fume hood when handling such materials. • 13. When heating a substance in a test tube, be careful not to point the opening of the test tube at another person or yourself. Heat • 14. Use caution and proper equipment like test tube holder and tongs to handle hot glassware. Cool glass looks the same as hot glass. • 15. Place broken glass and solid substances in designated containers. Keep insoluble waste materials out of the sink. • 21.
